Hello From Southern England

I don't see why rock should have such low second hand value, after all it is arguably very old to start with (would say millions but it's not just plain rock).

Think of it as an investment almost, and don't be so soft if you come to sell it on, you never know the price of LR might go up (specially with limited exports and all that stuff floating around).

:D

Doesn't your weir have a return hole drilled? (I assume not from reading through).

Hi. Keeping my eyes open for local breaking down of tanks, and on eBay. Not a lot out there, a little. My weir has only one hole down to the sump, now with a much quieter durso style drain. Return is on the right side of the sump back up behind the tank to the right rear corner.

Cheers.

Hi loving your marine tank and so far going well :good: seriously reading all these marine journals really makes me want to goto marine, thats why I am keeping malawi cichlids at the moment as they are the closest to the marine looks and prefer a rocky environment. Must be right exciting, even at the start when the cycling begins whilst thinking of your future marine fish lol, you still find lots of marine invertebrates soo many of them from the live rock, makes it exciting. I won't mind even starting off first with a 90l marine tank and then upgrading to a 5ft marine tank but right now financially i won't be able to go that big yet :-( lol.

Sorry I haven't read through the whole thing, but have you decided what fish you want in there and what types like eels, puffers, sharks, goby's or tangs?

Yeah, tell me about it. lol. Tank was a bargain, but everything else adds up quickly. Liking your little cave in the bottom right. We're still deciding on what to get. Getting snails ETC tomorrow from LFS, so will take a look. List is the usual, "nemos" "dories" "Gills"... don't worry, got those written down in their proper genus.

Just hoping I've not started too big?

What are you Nitrites and Ammonia at if these are not 0 I would not add any CUC they are very sensitive to them.

A Bigger tank is much easier to keep than a nano a lot more stable If I knew what I know now I would never have bothered with a Nano :good:

I remember seeing someone saying larger volumes of water are easier to manage, chemical wise - so easier for newbies... also, my readings last night were:

Ph: 8.0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: <0.3
Nitrates: 50
Salinity: 1.0230

I've upped the temperature to 27°c and have been re-scaping - I went to the local toy shop and spend £1.50 on a spade! Felt pretty random walking around in the rain today carrying that!

Also found in the original LR box another hitch hiker! Crab, about 5mm. He's fine.

Just tested ammonia, still 0

OK, if I've worked this out right - I need to do a water change soon? readings are 0, 0, 50. I'll need to get that down a bit with a water change. To do that, I'll need to change about 25% ?
Working that out, 425 + 80 = 505. 25% = 127L
Biggest buckets I spotted in Tescos last night (yeah, I know, on a Saturday evening) were 45l.
So I'll have to fill 3 of those with my SLOW RO system, heat, salt - then work out easiest way to get that in, old out - old out first I assume - which I can do straight to the tub with more tubing. Back in, how do others do this?

You dont do a water change until you have no ammonia or nitrites, just nitrates :good:

Can I just check how much live rock you currently have?

Good morning. I've got 0 readings for everything except nitrate. Also only have about 25Kg of rock.

So do you intend buying more and when? Not much point in doing a water change if you need to add more live rock as it will then throw the tank back into a cycle

Just about to get in the car and go get some more, most likely not the last trip either. This trip will only be about 10KG, and we're thinking we'll want another 10? Good point, didn't realize it'll go again. When I add the LR today, should I expect the ammonia to increase again? Along with the nitrite?

Thanks, Al.

Indeed yes, very likely - transport in salt water and you will get less die off (ask the lfs if they will give you a couple of empty salt buckets with lids and trasport in those, also useful for mixing the satly stuff in

ps you need approx 45/50 kilos to filter your tank :good:

Morning. We disappeared off before I'd read this, Sorry. We transported our rock back home in the Styrofoam box we got the last lot in the post with, and wet newspaper all over it. Seems to have survived okay. Fun and games trying to get the rock back onto the glass. I think I might leave it as is for now, where it is. Got about another 2 weeks before I can go get some more, so then it'll be another 2 weeks after that before I can add any finned life. I might have another crack at it tonight, and if we can build some sturdy enough bommies(?) we might leave the rest of the rock? Think we must be up to about 40Kg now. We'll see how it looks first. But if it does look a little sparse, will be at least another 4 weeks. Never mind, we're loving the amount of life we collected on that last run to the LFS.

My own personal suggestion to on getting your LR posted, I wouldn't bother. Even if it's a few extra £ per KG.

Maybe we're just enjoying having this feather duster worm around too much to imagine the tank without it? :D

Just saving up for the next 10Kg, and we should nearly be there.

If you are upto 40Kg of LR I would not add anymore scape what you have best to have lots of swimming room for all them new fish :good:

I had 45Kg in my 100 Gallon and have since removed at least 5Kg when you buy corals they will generally be on LR anyway :hey:

Using the Berlin method its better to have a good flow than lots of LR if you add 80Kg of rock to the tank flow will be impeded so will be less effective than 30Kg with good flow you can always add some LR to the sump have 8Kg in mine atm that needs moving on :)

wow lots of freebies on that rock; worms, sponges, zoas, mushrooms, and even a watch by the looks of it!
