Hello all,

I have a 180 litre Juwel Rio 180 with the original heater. Looking at my temperature this weekend, it seemed a little high. It seems to still switch on an off periodically maintaining a constant temperature, but I can't seem to lower the temperature setting any more. So, I think it's time to ditch the old heater!

I don't have the internal filter any more so it doesn't need to fit in there (eheim external now), and I would like a sumbersible one presumably about 200W.

Any recommendations. One with the temp setting actually on it rather than just +/- would be good.

Cheers,
Squid

rena smart heaters are great i have them in most of my tanks, very accurate and not glass so very very difficult to break also has a flashing light when the temp is 3 degrees either way of your setting to warn you of a drop or rise in temp. a 200w will cost you about £20 i think, not the cheapest but worth it in my eyes :good:

Just looked at them. They do sound good!

i have a 200W interpet heater in my 180l and its never failed me yet, shows me what temprature i have the heter set at and keeps the water as i like it.

the rio 125 had a juwel heater and i cant set the temp unless i keep using the thermomater! so that will be changes soon enough :)

I have a aqueon heater in my tank now, Its been in there for a year and a half now with no problems, It is fully submersible and does have the temps instead of +/-. When I bought the heater I pulled out every different kind of heater to see how its made and if it had a +/- or the temp, LOL I think the pet store was getting upset with me, I did the same thing with canister filters pulling out all the media checking to see how everything was made and if it was built good. The lady that works there came up and asked me what I was doing I told her I'm not buying anything unless it was made good, and Im sure you dont want me to bring it back and tell you its junk do you? She left me alone after that. Here is the site for the heater, oh ya it has a life time warrenty, and it shuts off if not properly submerged, so no damage or overheating.

i'm no expert but the jager range of heaters look good, they claim to use less power as well not sure if thats true or not.

Quick question. Are the rena heaters as effective if not attached to a filter inlet, and do they fit to eheim filters, as I have been told the eheim pipes are marginally different.

Cheers

I have a 200W Hydor Inline spliced into the outlet hose of my Eheim and so far its worked great (2 yrs.) Its kept a rock solid temp never varying a single Farenheit degree that I could see, except if I adjusted it. The advantages that I could see are first of course that its completely out of the tank and never seen, but secondly that the temp adjusted water is highly mixed because of the high flow from the Eheim. It seems quite powerful, being able to raise colder water very quickly but then its oversized for my 106L/28G.

Its easy to clean. I just run one of my hose cleaning brushes through it during my normal hose maintenance (I just lift the entire collection of hoses, pipes and heater off the back of the tank and carry it to the bathroom for cleaning.) I do try to be careful with the heater though as its glass inside and I've heard people forget that and break them. Mine's hanging via a soft nylon cord tied around the back of the aquarium center brace and its ever so slightly irritating to untie/tie but I could've made a hook, so its my own fault.

I looked into it because of recommendations from members on TFF, some of them here in the hardware section.
