I've just got my visitherm thermometer through and having read through all the instructions it doesn't anywhere mention the restrictions on placement angle.

Now my Mechanical Engineer of a B/f tells me that thermodynamically it should be horizontal at the bottom of the tank (before he realised that there was a current involved!) I like the idea of this as it would be less unsightly. However is this viable, would it affect the heater/thermostat relationship?

Cheers
Helen

Hi i have the same heater and was wondering about it's position in the tank. the leaflet only showed it standing upright. :S

I've always read and been told that they should be diagonal and that's how I use all of mine, with the exception of the non-submersible one that is an HOB (and will soon be replaced with a Visi-Therm Stealth heater).

Cheers, diagonal it is. I'll grow some plants in front of it!

I suspect he means his tank may not be tall enough for it to fit vertically.

As long as you have decent water circulation, it doesn't matter where it's placed. For show tanks, you can put a submersable heater at any angle you want, making it easy to hide with decos. In my breeding tanks, which are far from showy, I just toss them in, they aren't even stuck to the glass.

I don't think the angle will matter too much as long as its in the water. Out of curiousity why can't you mount it horizontal ?

Some of mine are horizontal, I mean just tossed in. They are resting on the bottom.

Ok, I could lay it down horizontal but because of the way I've done my substrate it wouldn't really fit horizontally without getting in the way. I might change its angle when I've got the decs and plants in but for the moment it can serve its purpose where it is!
Here's the latest photo of my tank, there are more here

P.S Yes I know I need to sort out the wiring!
