Hey all,
Was just feeding my fish then, and i stupidly always balance the lid on the side of the tank  . today i nearly knocked the lid, lights and all into the tank but caught it at just the right momment. Good ball handling skills in rugby and basketball helped out here i think!!

but for that split second i thought i was going to fry all my fishy friends
Whats your most scary momments in fish keepin?

Greg

My tank is right next to a banister and the toolbox is on the banister, and the hammer was on the toolbox. I opened the toolbox without moving the hammer and the hamer fell in between the tank and the banister, banging on the tank on the way down. The tank was full of water, but didn't have any fish and luckily the tank didn't evencrack. I got so lucky!

My worst moment was when i hadnt seen my khuli loach for 2 days. I looked at the filter and swimming behing the green plastic was my khuli loach! so i didnt hestate to take the lid off the tank and save my little liability! he got out the filter and was on the floor of the tank motionless and i feared the worst! I gently touched his side to see if he was still alive when he reacted by shooting off up the side of the tank, out the top, falling 3 ft to the floor and going under my bed! I was in absolute dispare and spent about 1 min looking for him with a torch! By this time i was thinking he must be dead, the bed was to heavy to move so couldnt move it, and finally after about 1 min i found him covered in fluff and was so upset! But suddenly he moved in my hand so i swiftly held him by the fluff in the tank and he shot off leaving all the mucky fluff in my hand without leaving any in the tank. He is still alive and i have only had the tank running nearly a year and that was only 3 months into fish keeping!!! He is alive and well and i have called him luck as a week before that he was stook behind the filter! And to add to all this not long ago i thought he was dead but he was fine! What an ordeal.
All the best Joemuz

what a dilemma!

The worst for me would be a few years back when I started getting into aquatics more seriously. I got a 55 from my Dad, who had to move. Nice tank, with a cheap composition wood stand. All was well for several months, until I went out of town for a week, and had my kids take care of the tank. The filter started to leak, which wasn’t a real problem, since the tank was in the basement on a concrete floor. The problem showed up a week later, in the form of a melting stand, which was slowly collapsing on one side. Of course I notice this in the morning, before work, when I have to be at work. It’s only out of level by an inch at this point. Only. :-(

So I’m stressed at work, these are my Dad’s fish, and I don’t want to lose them. I also don’t want to deal with 55 gallons across the floor. I stop & get an iron stand on the way home, along with a 20 gallon to hold the fish while I empty everything out & put it on a new stand. I figure this should take a couple of hours. Wrong, try closer to 6 hours. The stand is close to 2 inches out of level, and sinking fast. I wedge the sinking side with a 2x4 & pray while I drain it. Thank God the wobbly melting stand holds, the fish go in the 20, and the old stand gets tossed. With a break for dinner, I was working on it until 1 am, with work again in the morning. The fish were fine, I was fried.

when my brother poured cold un treated water i.e. tap into the tank ontop of my cory it went into shock and didnt move for like 15 minutes just tritched occationally then got back up and continuing on with its live

ouch! I haven't had many 'danger moments' but I was quite worried when I couldn't see my kribs, turns out they were breeding behind the filter, shame the male killed his mate though

sucking young fry up with the gravel vac (or airline tubing) is the worst feeling. I've gutted a few in my time...snapped a few backbones...ruined a few fish, it's a terrible feeling. The guilt, the guilt!

A few weeks ago I nearly dropped a heavy glass lid on my midas after a water change. It was a "*gasp..NOOOOOO" moment but thankfully it didn't hit him. It did, however, slice my hand when I grabbed it by the broken corner in such a hurry. Meh, better me than him.

It must be realy hard to admit to things like that :/ but thers no point lying about it is there!
Aswell as the bad things in fish keeping there are the good times that follow!!! :good:  Iv had some rubbish times as well as some realy brill ones!!!
We av all been there at some point in our lives!

Lol, I've nearly done that a few times. Oops.

The worst was probably when I was cleaning the filter and my Betta swam through the hole were the filter outlet usually is. I stupidly left the room to go fetch something, think I was looking for a torch, and when I got back I could see his fins poking up from the depths of the filter. I thought he'd swam right inside the filter pipes and I'd never get him ought. Luckily he was just poking round the sponges though. I quickly scooped him up in the net and dumped him on the other side of the tank.

Now whenever he goes near the filter when I'm working on it, I poke my finger through the filter and wiggle it round, and make little roaring noises. He normally backs away then. The noises are quite unneccessary,I just do them for my own entertainment.

So did the water from the leaking filter cause the stand to warp?

Did it ever. That iron stand was the last stand I bought, I make the rest myself. I recently gave that stand away. That composition stand probably got recycled into something more useful, like firewood.

I've had plenty of fry take "the ride" wuv. I've found if you use a little bigger tubing, and keep a finger over the end in the bucket you can slow or stop the flow. Even if they do get pulled in, it's less current, and they really don't get injured. It's tough to keep this from happening if you have a lot of fry, all you can really do is try to minimize the trauma.
