I switched on the lights a couple of hours ago to this sight.

Whoa, they suddenly disappeared. Let me add them again.

Congrats :) Same happend to me the other day, cept mine layed in a far less easy place to spy on :p

I also have another question. I know that the larger one is supposed to be the male because he has no pink belly, and the smaller one is a female because she has a pink belly, but in the second pictures, the larger one has blue speckles in his black spot, and I thought the males weren't supposed to have blue speckles in their black spot.

The eggs were definitely all eaten this morning.

Don't worry happens with me all the time. My Rams got the farthest without eating the eggs just a few days ago. They cared for them for at least 3 days (not sure exactly how many.) Sometimes they learn not to eat them after a few spawns, other times they don't (like a lot of domesticated Cichlids.) You may need to end up raising them artificially if you ever want to have a batch...

yeh you can pretty much ignore the blue spec on black spot idea :) ive never known it to be true anyway. Mine ate the eggs aswell, stupid fish, risk your life to protect them then eat them yourself?! bah, ill give them 1 more shot then the eggs are goin into the breeder.

all species of cichlid usually take a couple tries to get the whole breeding things right. From the pics, the eggs actually look unfertilized (white coloration instead of the dark yellow of the yolk sac) so realizing this, the parents will eat them to regain the energy used to create them. After they get the whole process correct, they will be some of the best parents in the underwater world

Ox :good:

I can't wait until they get a nice batch because I've always wanted to experience this cichlid parenthood I've heard so much about. How long does it take until the parents have another batch?

Mine laid eggs yesterday - they are a beige colour. From what ive read they should turn orange if they are fertile and go white if they are not is this correct or does the colour of the eggs vary too? Is the fact that they are beige a good or bad sign??

Also if they do hatch (this is their third lot - last 2 they ate!) where would I get micro worms from bearing in mind that ive not time to grow any cultures?

They should lay in another 3 weeks to a months time...
The eggs actually look fertile in my opinion as i can see one or two which are distincly white.
As mentioned before, it takes a few tries, but they should take care soon.
Care will hoever be temporary and the fry will likely to be eaten when she is ready to spawn again.
The best way is to rear them yourself in a seperate tank... :good:
Dan.

and for Gilli...
unless the eggs are opaque and white, the egss are fertile...

Just wanted to announce that the second batch has been laid tonight. Just to keep tabs on the egg laying intervals. It hasn't even been two weeks.

I know it's been a while, but just wondered how you are getting on? Have your rams managed to raise any fry yet? My blue ram is full of eggs for the first time so I'm reading up all I can. Hoping to find a tank divider to protect them from the others if any hatch out in the future.
