We want to seperate the black(small) gravel from the blue(larger) gravel. Trying to create the blue(reef) in the back to the black(sand) mostly in the front.
Need ideas on what type of material would work to keep them seperate from each other, while realizing it wont be perfect. Thinking some sort of T- shaped plastic upside down filled almost to the top on each side? Not sure if certain plastics are non-toxic for fish? My dad and I have got all the rock, and driftwood in place, all the gravel has been washed, and we are ready to go ahead and add the water then. I'm very excited :hyper: . Pictures will be posted soon :)

It's extremely difficult to do without the dividers showing above the substrate. If the dividers are below the surface of the substrate then the sand will start to filter into the gravel, eventually showing the divider anyway. There have been a lot of threads about this but I haven't seen a solution posted yet

I have tried to search the forum on this with no luck, can you point me in the right direction? I have a bunch of ideas for the plastic pieces I could use, but I dont know if plastic is toxic in any way to fish?

Plastic should be fine. Most tank dividers (the kind you would use to divide a betta tank are made of plastic. Actually, one of those cut to fit would be something you could try using.

You can use plastic, acrilic or glass. The best way in my opinion to avoid that you see the ends of the plastic, is to accentuate the division with stones or other ornaments. That allows you to fold the plastic, put the stone or ornament on top, and this will allow you to hide the plastic and at the same time avoid that the two substrates mix.

As far as I know these 3 materials are 'fish safe'.

I tried doing something like that (a beachy effect) when I first started. But as soon as I started doing my gravel vacs with the Python, there went the beach..... ... let us know if you figure it out.

Wow, thanks for all the replies :).
I am going to try some drywall cornerbead (plastic of course) and see how that does. Will definetly use some of the suggestions here!
