I havent got much time to write so quick question.

I have started researching a different type of plec to go in my community setup.
I wanted it to be fairly small and very unusual/pretty.

Obviously in an ideal world that pleco would be Zebra pleco but i have recently fallen in love with the L260 Pleco -
Queen Arabesque pleco.

Has anyone on here previously owned this pleco or do you have one now?
If so could you tell me about your experiences etc?

Any information is greatly appreciated the more the better!

Thanks :) x x x

P.S. any idea how much one would cost?
And what sort of tank mates are suitable?

I had one many years ago, she was lovely, kept her in a community tank - she used to come out when people were around, I loved her.

I have a stary night plec at the moment, very pretty and small but hides whenever you go near the tank

Have a look at this thread by vickiandkev:
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/344543-l236-l46-and-l260/

Vickiandkev deal with and sell all kinds of different plecos and would probably be the best people to ask about profiles and prices :good:

The Queen Arabesque is a gorgeous looking pleco, I was looking a little while ago to get one but they`re quite thin on the ground. You may be able to source one from a reputable breeder in the UK :)

I wish I could tell you but I can't because I haven't got mine yet. Hopefully though by this week end I will have 3 of them. But all I can say is that their requirements are similar to the L46 zebtra pleco. L260 are pretty hard to get hold of. In a fish shop, expect to pay around £50-£100 each, depending on size and if they are wild caught .

Hi,

The L260 is a stunning plec, and will certainly look great in your tank. Are you looking to buy a adult, fry, juvenile? Adults are very hard to fine as they are on the banned export list and will also cost around £100. Fry and juveniles Are easier to find and cheaper 1.5" fry would cost between £20-£30.

Because the L260 are hypans they can be a little nervous at first but will so get comfortable in their tank. They are complete carnivores but will eat any type of meat source provided, bloodworm, carnivore tabs as long as its meat they will eat! They also generally speak don't compete for food that well, I wouldn't keep them in a community tank (thats not to say you cant) but make sure you provide enough food and a large range so that they get a chance to eat.

I saw you mentioned your first choice would be a zeb? Have you seen the L066 king tiger, L199 columbian zebra or the L270 chocolate zeb? They are all cheaper than the L46 zeb. Also the Tiger peckoltia L038 or the L080 tocantins tiger again from the peckoltia group. This means that they are a lot hardier than the hypans (again only generally speak and in my experience).

How big is your tank? The l260 only grow to around 3-4" but like most hypans are more sensitive to water parameters. If you go by the book they need pH 6.4-7.6 but you can acclimatize them to harder water.

With regards to tank mates pleco do really well with dither fish like rummynose, neons, guppies that sort of thing. Just bare in mind that they dont compete for food that well so keep other tank mates to mid to top dwellers and you will be fine.

If you need any other pleco help let me know :)

thanks :good:

I actually got one and was sold to my dad as a Clown Pleco or something. Great fish, my dad had it for about 2 years and me another 4-5. Always out and about, good temperment, tolerated my cories who would bother her often.

Thankyou everyone for your replies!

The tank is about 25 gallons.
How are the L260 with other plecos? What about Kuhli loaches?

Oh and thankyou for the suggestions on the other fish. They all look great but i kindof set my sights on 10cm being max size because i do not want to have tankmates that are alot smaller than it.

Plus i love this pleco already anyway :)

Vickiandkev - you seem to know alot about plecos can i ask you a quick question?
Why is it Bristlenosed pleco can be housed in a tank that is a minimum of 60 litres, when they grow to around 15cm which is nearly half the width of 60 litre long?
Its always puzzled me :S

Thanks again everyone :) x x x

Hi,

No worries :good: With regards to the bristlenose and I am probably going to get shot for this, but USUALLY the people that keep pleco that can grow to that size in a tank too small will have been sold these guys and girls as 'tank cleaners' so will not feed them the correct nutrition to see them grown to their full potential. I just recently sold my breeding group of brown bristlenose and the alpha male was about 17-18cm!

The L260 are lovely. I will be selling some wild caught (pre-ban) L260 adults soon (they are coming from a friend) If you are interested let me know :)

thanks.. Oh and kuhli loach will be fine with them :)

what do you want from a plec?, this plec can and usually is very elusive and often in the correct setup will very rarely been seen.

Whats the tank setup, whats the substrate, what temp is the tank permanently set to, what other tanks mates do you propose to keep.

They are pretty much the same as zebra's in that they don't compete well for food, very shy and timid and not often seen. Any aggressive feeding fish and they will probably not come out at food time, leaving them to be undernourished and far from thrive. They require a much higher temperature than you average tank... normally mid 80's for them to fully thrive and feel happy. The tank needs to have a lot of hiding places.

If i were to answer the question.. are they suited to a community tank?, i personally would say no unless you set the tank up around him/her and then add suitable tank mates later. This doesn't mean they can't be put in community tanks but many other factors have to be thought out first.

Cost wise... adults if you luck enough to come across will range from £30 sub adult to £50-£60 adult... don't buy one at £100 like people are suggesting they cost because they are simply not worth this unless it really is what your willing to pay and they are paying over the odds by illegally importing them (which sadly people are still doing).... juvenile 1-5 inch can be found for as little as £10-£15 but the usual price for this size is around £20

Stunning fish and a nice addition :).
