Hardiest tropical fish ??

I had 2 reactivate o post my comment.
guppies are very hard to keep alive , they are mature in the store and live a season in the house. I have a catfish, a rose barb , ciclad, and a beta, a gurami. all well due to the exception I had to build a coffin for the barb he was the orginal tank fish 1 1/2 yrs old died of natural causes.
no heater, and my house stays cold, tank temp at 60 plus degrees. go figure?\ you want a hardy fish. GOLD FISH they stay alive in a pond frozen. but yes ciclads, and cat fish are a great fish marlins sword tails, are fine as well.
keep in mind when you purchase fish from a store, you introduce danger to your tank. so having a special tank set up will prolong its life cycle.
thank you for allowing my opinion. not a newbie but new to the site :kewlpics:

usually, larger fish fish (10 inches and mroe) are mor hardy than the smaller fish for many reasons.

Midas and Red Devils are quite hardy, but i wouldn't recommend them unless you have a big tank and don't mind having everything in it destroyed from time to time, including your fingers :) lol

I'm exagerating but they do have mood swings. I wouldn't keep them unless I had a huge tank

That's why my tank has so few fish.

I haven't bought any for so long. Everytime I buy fish I get problems.

I have had a few problems just lately but I know it was my fault with low maintenance after my injury and BEFORE I restock (if I do) I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

I have posted messages in the goldfish board and after researching .. decided against them due to my size tank and the fact they are messy and need more water changes (which is what I am having trouble with and according to my physio it could be a while before I am back to being able to do more or possibly it could be a lifelong injury).

I need to replace with something I can handle with my injury .. without giving up my tank.

After getting a python cleaner (if I can find someone to ship to Australia :/ ) it's going to help but still want the least amount of strain on my body as possible.

Guppies are terrible here. The only ones that survived are the ones that were born in my tank.

Platties are better but also not so great. I go to buy some and they have clamped fins so I give them a big miss.

Anyone in the Brisbane area and have a good stockist ... please post a message where you buy your fish.

you should try mollies, i have them and they are a pretty hardy fish that can survive multiple water conditions.

I never had any luck with Zebra danios, Guppies OR Harlequin Rasboras. However, I can reccomend Rosy Barbs very strongly - definately the most hardy fish I have come across.

Where can I find info and pictures on rosy barbs.

I notice you are in England. I am in Australia so our temps would be very different. Do you think this could be a problem with the rosy barbs or are they OK in all climates.

Ok found them in my book which is not very comprehensive.

It says all temps are OK but they prefer slightly acidic water versus my platties which prefer slightly alkaline water :dunno: (I think Im right from research only.. no practical experience at all)

So would these guys mix well ... platties I have now + addition of rosy barbs.

Will they eat fry and nip at the few guppies I have left ?

They might nip fins... Barbs are famous for doing that... I've never seen mine nip fins but then I don't have any fish with long tails so I wouldn't know.

They are very active, always zooming up and down in front of the glass, so they need a lot of food. My pH is 7.4 and they have been perfectly fine in that.

As long as it is stable your pH shouldn't make too much difference.

It is likely that they will eat fry.

Hope this helps!

I agree with BVip, that many speicies of S.A Cichlids are unbeliveably tough. Im my experience, Oscars are the toughest fish, followed by Silver Dollars, Common Plecs and Khuli Loaches!

Since none of those are good prospects for a 22g, I would get some Convicts or Danios.

maybe if you get the ph and hardness of your water that may narrow the search down for you. some fish like high ph whereas others do better in a lower ph. just a suggestion. :)

i meant if he tested it to see what the ph was. :)

I think goldfish are hardy if they are looked after well, and black neons.

lol like vip said a big cichlid thats like 12 inches is pretty well indestrucatble you con bonk em on the head with a bat and they will still live.. lol

(obviously these are useless facts to you as u have a 22 gallon tank)

Convicts Yes thats it! good work Danny, i would have to agree that a convict is the most hardy small fish there is, one of mine got belted hard by my Red Devil trying to protect his young, when i mean got belted i mean got belted he was ripped up really bad including his lips ripped off but to this day he still swims and likes to tease the RD.
