Hanako The 226 Year Old Koi

im no expert on Koi but this showes a healthy fish who was determined to keep on fighting.

So my latest issue of Practical Fishkeeping arrived through my door yesterday momrning, i read for a bit then i found a articly on fish longevity (how long fish can live, And the world records are showen as examples). I read on an found a article on a Koi carp named Hanako, what an amazing life it must of had, passed down generation to generation untill an owner wondered "How old is this fish?", Well after prising some scales of Hanako and sending them to a specialist an outstanding result was found, Hanako was 226 years old. 226 years! what would you do with that?. the other Koi were aged at 168, 153, 149, and two at 139.

Saddly Hanako died long before the article was ever written. Hanako died in 1977 at the grand old age of 226 and over 70Cm in length.

Actually i've heard about that story and the koi isn't actually anywhere near that old. Basically the owners of the koi all employed people to look after it and the other koi- the koi keepers knew how much their master loved this particular koi though and were terrified of the consequences they could face should anything bad happen to the koi. So when the koi died, the koi keepers replaced the koi with an identical looking koi, and the owner knew none the better. Every keeper of the koi did this though everytime the koi died so the owner ended up believing that this koi he had inherited was hundreds of years old when in fact it had actually just been replaced dozens of times without the owners realising.

Koi simply cannot live for hundreds of years just like we can't for the same reasons- the average life expectancy of koi is about 50years.
