Hamsters Or Mice

If possible I would go with gerbils. They don't smell like mice but are as active and they are always ready to play unlike grumpy hamsters. I know you hadn't thought about them but maybe you should. They are very unlikely to bite and the most interesting rodents to watch and play with but that is just my opinion.
OMG NO GERBILS! I had a pair of Gerbils and they were evil. I prefered my one teddybear hamster over the Gerbil anyday. The only good thing they have is that there more active than hamsters. But hamsters are way friendlier. :D

I have never been bit by my gerbils apart from one very unfortunate incident involving a lego window. I have not had one hamster which hasn't bitten me and trust me it hurts more than enything else and I have been bitten by a lot of different things.

Well i guess its just the cards we were drawn. But both my gerbils bit me and the hamsters throughout the years never bit me.

back to square 1
i dont have a clue what ones to get

by that i meen between mice /hamsters or gerbils

Go to a shop or breeder and ask to handle each. Only your opinoin matters as they are your pets and they all have favourible and unfavourible characteristics.

well ok shrimply do u know any good websites for hamsters or mice if anyone does pm them to me

i think i want dwaf hamsters

If you want 2 hamsters you'll have to go for the dwarf russian species as the standard petshop syrians cannot be kept together, they will fight to the death.

Hi,

Whichever you choose, expect them to keep you awake at night if they are upstairs because most small furries are nocturnal and will run for hours in a wheel which is very annoying if they are in the bedroom.

When i was younger i shared a bedroom with my sister and she would take all the cages downstairs at night because she couldn't sleep for the noise. My mum would complain a lot because you could hear the wheels squeaking all through the house. I used to put butter on it so it would run quieter but the hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats lick it off. it does keep them quiet for a while though.

Emma

ps. Whichever you decide on, be sure to research loads. google is your friend. There are loads of forums dedicated to small furries.

ok and if i get 2 mice
Oh i forgot to say a couple of years ago i had a beutiful mouse that a friend gave me that was a cinnomon color and bigger than the little white pinkies about the size of a male syrian hamster and he was the most active and friendly, mellow pet i had at that age. So i do support having mice.

It should prepare you for keeping any kind of rodent.

My own personal preferance of all rodents would be guinea pigs as they require minimal care, can be very cute + docile too. I have 5 currently, and it takes 5 min a day to feed them + my rabbits.

If your after a smaller rodent though hamsters are easy to keep, and £30 will go reasonably far. As your in the UK do you have a wilkinsons near you? They have "hamster startup kits"; not the fanciest of cages but more than enough for 2 dwarfs/ 1 syrian or chinese. They have kits for the other rodents too but I don't know exact prices.

thanks seanc thats cool
i have wilkonsons not far ill go and look on there website

yes hampsters

I've kept hamsters, mice, rats, and guinea pigs. Never, ever again will I have a hamster, that's all I'll say about them. I was NEVER bitten by my mice or rats, but the hamsters... they were Russian dwarfs and mean little devils. Guinea pigs were too skittish for my liking even after years of handling. Mice and rats are the winners in my book. Female mice don't smell terrible and are sooo cute and cuddly
Rats, however, really take the cake. They're like little puppies!! Very intelligent and friendly creatures, and the vast majority won't bite even if they haven't been regularly handled. Females don't smell bad as long as you keep their home clean. If you can have something a bit bigger than a mouse or hamster, I highly recommend a rat :D

EDIT: typo
