Well, I've a had a busy few days what with getting the new fish and with work, but finally got round to getting a couple of half reasonable pics and writing a littel bit about them.

Bought them on weds afternoon. Arrived home to find we had a power cut, which lasted for 3 hours. Not the best timing ! I had just done a water change with cold water before I'd left the house to get the discus and was expecting the tank to be nicely up to temperature on my return. So things were not as I'd hoped. Thankfully I managed to get it up to temp by boiling water on the gas hob and tipping it in.

Sadly, i decided to rehome my female turquoise sev as she just remained rather nervous and it was getting to me. Bruce, my male sev is now in the big tank, with the Uaru and chocolate cichlid, amongst others ... all is going well there, and Bruce is behaving impecably (so far !!).
So, anyway, that left me with the 300 litre (80 US gallon) free to put my one discus (Eric) in from the big tank, and 4 new friends ! Eric had been doing OK in with the Uaru but I think was being bullied at night by someone in there and had actually sustained damage on tusday night, so the decision was made to get him into a discus-only tank with some friends.
his friends were bought from the same shop that Eric came from, as I knew that they were all raised in tap water, not an RO mix. Mew fish are another blue turquoise, about 4" long (Buster), and three smaller fish, about 2-2.5" long. They are a red-eyed blue diamond (cobalt ?) (called Sasha), a much darker one of the same (Rooney), and a pigeon blood (Peebee). Not quite sure of my accuracy in the description of teh blue diamond, but I'm not too bothered just at the moment. Got all four for £80 (from Aquajardin, Fair oak, Southampton) so I thought that was a pretty good deal. They all looked sprightly, reasonably plump, and happy in the shop.

Once in their new home with Eric, they all basically sulked for the best part of two days, but have really come out of their shells today, in that they are all swimming out and around together. All ate a few bloodworm and generally seemed happy with things.
Eric and Buster are deciding who will be boss of the tank (looks like Buster has the upper hand at the moment) but I'm sure they will sort it out in a few days. There's no bad fighting at all.

Here's some pics ...

That's the two turks and Sasha, the lighter cobalt/ bluediamond (whatever !)

And that's them all out swimming together, trying to convince me to give them some more bloodworm.

They are all real characters. I am actually thrilled with them. They are so much more interesting (even just so far) than any discus I see in LFS tanks. I'm sure they are not great examples of their strains, but I am wanting pets not show fish.
The next task will be to persuade them that bloodworm is not the only food in the world. Oh, and also to get a small bristlnose for uneaten food and algae duties.
Really looking forward to seeing these grow.

They are nice, I just could not hack the daily large water changes required for Discus.

Best of luck with them though, hope they grow well :good:

Nice discus, shame about getting rid of the sev, I thought that was so pretty.

i feel your pain i had to sacrifice my vinny for mine... nice fish

I find now that my Cichlid tank is over stocked they get along much better. No fights no nips they just swim around and do their own thing the Uaru are more out going with the others around because my severums are very outgoing it help the shy ones feel ok. Now the Parrot and Nip the green severum get along well too. Before I thought they would kill eachother. So since all is well I don't want to give the Uaru up in fear it will mess up the balance. Good new is I could have a 180-200 gal tank in the future SO I will keep them and see what happens.

I think you could even put your Female Severum in with the others and she would be fine. Did you try.

The bigger Discus look great. How do you like them?

maybe the pics but the blue diamond looks a little weird to me

the rest are very nice though :good:

Hmm, I was under the impression that the Discus at Aquajardin were being kept in a seperate RO system to all the other fish at Aquajardin?

Great looking fish though!

I'm cycling across to Allington Lane after work in hopefully a little over six hours from now, as I've not been in for two weeks (quite possibily the longest gap since finding them in late March

This is a contentious subject within the discus world. I will be doing about 30% twice a week. Unless you are growing out small juvies or wanting to breed, many authorities say that what I am suggesting would be just fine. Also my tank is really quite understocked, and I will not be force feeding them to get them absolutely as big as possible.

I would not keep discus if it required daily WC's.

That is correct.

However, the fish are raised in, and transported to the shop by the supplier in tap water. The shop then convert them to an acidic RO mix. Who knows why ? Seems to me that it seems to be generally agreed these days that for maintaining discus (not breeding) then pretty much any water params are OK, so long as you keep them stable (stability is the key). the key thing is to keep good water quality in terms of the nitrogen cycle.

I agree, it was definately an odd picture of the blue diamond. She doesn't actually look like that in the flesh. I will get a better one up at some point.

30% twice a week sounds more manageable :) Not that much different from doing 50% a week, though spread out a little.

I must admit curiosity got the better of me and I had to have a look on that Simply site, to see if I could see what all the fuss is about  There was a long thread on there regarding water changes with adults in the tank, and everyone was saying w/c daily. Though think they were chucking loads of food at them to force grow them. This isn't something I agree with, but there we are.

I hope yours grow well, certainly some beautiful colours on your fish :good:

I do 50% twice a week on my 400, no choice its really really heavily stocked, but I get no aggression problems to I am really reluctant to change it. So Discus wouldnt be a problem if I had another tank and there was another 2 days in the week to fit another tank into my shedule

I do 50% minimum daily on my Discus and they love it. The majority on "Simply" do even more. But definately use age water, straight tap water is a pain. Having the ability to drain to my yard and fill with a pump wakes WC's a breeze

I visited Aquajardin yesterday after work, where Sam told me about the power failure... The remaining Discus are still sulking!

I forgot to ask him, but reading the "blurb" by their tank suggests that they are now living in Southampton tap water, rather than RO.

Are they settled in yet and are the tankmates chiilled out about the "invasion?"

As I said, there is a LOT of discussion and disagreement on this issue. Many people do seem to have a lot of success with a very moderate WC schedule. I intend to be one of those ! If not, I can't see the discus bug continuing, to be honest.

I take it that you have a system in place to resuse all that water?
