OMG HORRIBLE. I was watching the adult cories and searching for the few fry I left in the tank. Well I found one and he was swimming around an adult and I thought, "yay, he's not eating it!!"

THEN HE TURNS AROUND AND SUCKS HIM UP. It was horrible to watch. He ate some then spit it out, then ate more, then spit out on and on.

I'm so sad. I feel like a bad parent. I immediately took apart the tank and siphoned out any little guys into the fry tank with airline tubing. I'm 99% sure I got them all.


So THAT solves my little conundrum... this third batch will definitely go into the fry tank..........

Yes it was very sad... but I think I only lost the one... On another note that third batch I got on Sat has started to hatch.

Sorry I know the pictures aren't the best... they were taken with an iPhone. My bf has a $2500 camera and it wasn't able to focus on them!! lol But that's just because we haven't bought a macro lens yet... soon to come.

Here's one of the new guys... very very small at the front of the pic!! And a big pile of eggs + some sand in the back.

The red belly is the bbs food

I would advise adding sand all over the bottom to stop bacterial infection build up,which fry can die from...

Yes they are VERY tiny. I'm feeding bbs and sometimes crushed (powdered) flake food... but more so bbs.

Ok good to hear about the red belly. I was worried there were some internal problems..

About the bare bottom vs sand thing... I am feeling confused. Personally I like the bare bottom so I can see the fry swimming around and can monitor them very closely this way. It is also very beneficial as I can spot a dead fry right away and get rid of it with airline tubing. Maybe these aren't good enough reasons... is there really no other option. I can't see them at all on the sand and it's very hard to suck up debris with airline tubing if I can't see it...

Its the film that builds up on the bottom that can lead to bacterial infections when not using sand, clean the bottom over with a bit of sponge to keep in clean.

i found using sand a little bit of an #14### to tell truth, but the airline trick is a good one as they get bigger they wast less food and less of it rots on the bottom, the bigger they get the easier to care for.

Yes the sand is very irritating for such small little guys...

I'm going to try and wipe up the bottom with a sponge then. Should I do this every day?


Also when I am doing w/c I just poor a bucket of dechlorinated water in... should I be concerned that this current is too rough and could be harming the fry? Should I go through the extra work of airline tubing the water into the tank so it is a very minimal current?

This is soooooooooooooooooooooooo hard... and I only want to bump up my own cory numbers... I couldn't believe actually breeding for profit!! That takes so much dedication... good job to those who do, but there's no way I could with full time uni and pt work.

i put a bucket of water on a chair and used a tube to siphon it into the fry tank.

On another note there seems to be a good number of newly hatched fry and about 10 or so from the last batch. Soooo cute. They all huddle under the moss balls I got them, and when I move it they're like AHHHhh!! Runnnn!!!

I like to sing to them "wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle, yeah!! do the wiggle dance!!" from lmfao "sexy and I know it" ahaha. Ok, I'm a bit of a loser.

#105### they're doing it again. Gotta have at least another 100 eggs.

I don't exactly want to raise them separately as I'm doing the others because I don't want to end up with a whole bunch of cories that make it to adulthood. But I feel bad leaving them to their doom in the adult tank where most will get eaten once hatched.

I feel like I should put the tetras back in there 'cause they'll eat the eggs and I won't have any problems.

I hate playing mother nature in these situations.



On another note I have added sand to the fry tank and just live without seeing them. But there seems to be quite a few alive. How long does it take for them to grow to a decent size? Not necessarily adulthood but at least a size where I can see them easily from a distance!

After a few weeks of good food you'll see them

My pygmys grew surprising fast,considering how tiny they were,w/c is good for encouraging growth rate too

Hmm sounds good. I try to feed them bbs 2-3 times a day and continue to do 30% w/c a day.
