I came back from holiday to find dead and missing fish and ich everywhere.
I know the feeling , its awful. truely awful.
My rule is not to add more than two fish a week, and to aclimatise them slowly to the tank. bag in water add some water every ten mins until releasing them 40 mins later.
If they die then try and figure out why and maybe don't add anything for a while.
test and change water often.
I too tend to learn things the hard way. eg. don't turn your filter off. I read the advice the day after...
Don't give up. but do the homework.
