hello all

A quick question for guppy owners out there. i noticed last night that my female guppy appeared to have developed a crooked back and that she was swimming at a tilt. the male and all the fry seem fine. im currently cycling the tank (biorb 60) and the nitites are high.

i would be very grateful for any input

regards

sean

horrible thought but have you done any syphon gravel cleaning lately. They do get in the way looking for food in the disturbed gravel and if you're not careful  (not from experience you understand!)

two possibilities come to mind. One is not good and the other is plain bad.

Fish TB or a vitamin deficiency.

Do you have a quarantine tank. If so I would move her to it immediatly. I'm not sure what the treatment is for fish tb but the vitamin deficiency is corrected by adding varience to the diet.

EDIT: WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER TOUCHING THE TANK WATER!

thanks both after reading all my books i had thought about both possibilities myself - i went to my lfs today to ask advice, the owner said he had seen it before but only in old fish, ive only had mine a couple of weeks but who knows how old they are when you buy them!! ive quarantined her for the moment see ill just have to see how it goes.

thanks for your help

Could be that she was injured... I'd isolate her for a few days before you un-needingly dose her with a vitamin supplement... anyways I've seen curved spins in fish before... Zebra danios usually... could just be a birth defect that didn't show itself untill now... you mentioned fry... I'm assuming she gave birth to them and that could've caused it... Anyways Isolate her and hey mabye even take her to the fish store and see what they say?! :/ anyways IT'S NEW YEARS HERE HAVE A BREW ON ME!

didn't think of that for some reason. There's a good chance it's a birth defect especially with a guppy.

yup yup :p no worries mate GL with this problem hopfully her back with unarch and everything will be fine... if not I've seen many fish with birth defects live long and happy lives, my blood parrot (cross breed of red parrot and convict cichlid) is missing part of her dorsal fin and she's fine and actually breeding on me right now :D

Happy new year all - my female has now been in quarantine for almost four days, she still has the spine defect but she seems to be swimming freely enough and she is eating. The male and all the fry are are still doing nicely so i was wondering if you think i should put her back in general population?

hmm if she's fine than go for it, but leave your quarintine tank set up just incase something awful ( knock on wood) happens to any more of the guppies  goood luck and thanks for sharing the progress with us :D

Hi all

Im sorry to say that i lost my female last night and then my male this morning! The female was in quarantine and when i cleaned the tank out it was coated in a thin film of slime - any ideas? the male just seemed to die suddenly, no slime involved. All my fry still seem to be fine!!

Has anyone any ideas what could be wrong - im gutted that ive not lost them.

sean

hmmm.... Odd... a layer of slime? could be that the water quality and the iso tank was poor and she developed it inorder to protect herself. I know I got an oscar from a petstore once and his slime coat was so thick you could actually see blood clots, Poor water quality is my guess... but as for the male....... Weird!? any signs of ich or velvet or anything? I can't imagine why he would die *snap* just like that...
