will guppies and platies breed together?
just wondering because petco has a pretty nice sale this month $5 for 5 fish (for guppies, mollies and tetras)
and i was thinking of getting 2 guppies and 3 neon tetras

right now i have 2 sunset fire platys and 2 otos in a 10G tank
the neon tetras will have their own tank in my room

IMHO, Tetras, need a minimum of 6 of their kind.. Platys like 3... Guppies at least 2... Mollies I'm not sure.. But Also I don't think They will breed together...(the Platys and guppies that is.. but I'm not totally sure not that....)

i will probably add a few more tetras a week or two later once these get settled in
if any knows for sure that the guppies and platies will mate then please let me know
i'll definately pick up another platy (i used to have 3 but my male died because of a broken heater, and now i have 2 females left)
id love to have some guppies which is why im asking if the 2 will breed together because if they do then i'll just get 2 male guppies and 1or 2 more female platies

now that i think about it, i'll wait on the tetras until i get a bigger tank
right now i just want the fish to breed and hopefully make some extra money by selling the fry
i think a hybrid of a fancy guppy and suset fire platy would look beautiful

OHHHHHH... Sry.. lol.. Well to answer that... lol.. I have Guppies and Platys together.. they have not bred togetgher as of yet hahahha..

Guppies and Mollies will cross breed.

Platies and Swordtails will cross breed.

Tetras are fin nippers. Keep that in mind and keep an eye out for that.

Normally fish will only crossbreed if they are in the same genus, and even then the fry will often not be viable.
Platies and swordtails are in the same genus as each other (xiphophorus) and will produce strong fertile fry.
Mollies and guppies are in the same genus (poecilia), but they are less keen on crossbreeding than the xiphophoruses and their fry will often have health problems.
A xiphophorus (platy or swordtail) cannot crossbreed with a poecilia (guppy or molly)- it would be a bit like trying to breed cats with dogs. (Breeding platies with swordtails is like breeding dogs with wolves, possible).
Very rarely different genera are so closely related that they can interbreed- but then there has usually been some argument as to whether these fish really should be assigned to different genera (e.g. limias and poecilias).

and i wouldn't reccomend just 2 male guppy's there will be aggression, but 5 is much better :good: providing you have the space

i agree with "lilfishie", i think that you should keep at least a group of five male guppies, just to keep them happy. And if they can breed with platys (which i am not sure they can do), then you have a better chance with 5 males. But, you have to make sure your platys are all females, since the platys would rather breed with their own species if there are platy males in the tank.

guppies can only breed with each other or mollies, with mollies there is a very very low survival rate most times none survive, as dwarfgourami said they are a complete different genus to platys

o ok thanks for telling me before i made a mistake

i'll just go for 3 for now and another platy to keep the other 2 company
when i get a bigger tank i'll add a few more guppies and platies
