Guppie Breeding

I have attempted to raise fry in a breeding tank floating in main tank twice with a small success. the difference when you raise the fry in a separate tank on their own is amazing!! mine are thriving! :D
Yeah; those breeding traps are only for n00bs who think they must save every single fry that's born! I don't know of one single 'professional' fish breeder who would use one!

Edit; of course, now someone's going to come on here and say, "oh, but I know the person who bred 'The World's Greatest Ever Guppy' and they swear by breeding traps", but that's just fishkeeping for you! I wonder if other hobbies have as much difference of opinion as fishkeeping (apart from Doctor Who fandom, I know that does, lol)?

Eh, I'm not a pro and I would never use one. What a pain in the #14###!

Good for you :D I expect to see 'The World's Greatest Ever Guppy' coming from your tank then ;)

No, breeding traps are terrible things; stressfull for the mother and too small for fry; even with the slits and stuff there's not enough circulation to keep the ammonia, nitrates and (very importantly in growing fry) hormones down.

I HAVE the World's Greatest Ever Guppy!

I just let my girls deliver in the Girl's Tank and then I suck up the fry and put them in their own tank until they're old enough to sex. Then into their respective tanks and let them grow up!

Thats good to know, guess ill try that style, sounds much saver as well
Okey--- Emergency,,,, Some of my fry, theyre tail fins arnt open,,
what could be wrong?? I had cleaned my gravel yesterday, and a small
water change, about 10 percent, the adult guppys are looking fine in the other
part of the tank, the water circulates so wwhat advice can u give me?

Cories are not hunters, they also don't have very big mouths really. They wouldn't purposely eat fry, maybe if they came across one and it had no where to escape it might get hoovered up but its not likely. Cories are peaceful

famous last words calling a fish peaceful :) there's a post on here somewhere about a homicidal molly!

With a syphon. You can either actually suck them up and into a bucket (they very tough; it's very rare to lose one like that) or you can use it like a 'dip tube' (which is a very useful skill to have in fish keeping anyway); put your finger over one end of the tube, put the other end over the fry (or dead fish or whatever); take your finger off the end, and woosh: up the tube it goes.

Finger back over the end, and you can carefully lift the tube out with a little coloumn of water in the tank end. The water will only go up the tube until it's level with the water surface in the tank; it won't start a syphon. Have a practice ;)

That is how I clean my tank actually with a syphon.. to pick up stuff off the bottom of the tank.. I just didnt know that the fry would live through being sucked up.. I removed them and put them in a bowl lastnight. I used a cup to remove them. I sucked up a dead fry yesterday like that though was easiest way to get it out at the time.

They don't always live after syphoning them up, through I fluke syphoning incident I swallowed a fry once!

Although that would probably only ever hapen with me seeing as I'm a walking disaster area!
