Abundant on the edge of the Continental Shelf at depths of about 100 metres in the south-western approaches to the English Channel. But this fish is uncommon, even rare, in shallow water.
Associated with red and yellow coral (A. Wheeler).
Probably found at similar depths off Ireland and Southern Scotland. Certainly, also abundant off Portugal, perhaps even in shallower water.
