hi i was wondering if anybody can help me. ive had problems with these worm like things in my tank for a while, so when id emptied it i decided to totally gut it change the gravel everything its currently cycling but these worms have come back. i thought they were planaria at first but having looked at photos of them they dont look anything like. their tiny thread like things that swim round in the water by curling up and then opening up and seem to have segments to their body ill try to get pics but probably wont turn out. im hoping their not harmful to my fish. not that theres anything in there at the moment. any ideas?

idk, its hard w/o pics...hopefuly theyre not some sort of internal parasite. since theres not plants...maybe theres a parasite killer???? im sure someone else will know more about this than i do. try googling worms in the aquarium

yeah ive been googling parasites n all sorts just get mad tales about parasites that replace fishes tonges lol. when i had them last time i tried methylene blue and was assured it would kill all parasites, yet they still swam about. tried all sorts but dont want to be going adding chemicals agian as its a newly set up tank again. even scrubbed it with hot water to kill anything in it.

I read some thing similar on here the other day about a guy with white worms in his tank he stripped his tank right down but that didnt work so he put his sisters goldfish in the tank and it ate all the worms and is sill going strong and no more worms.

come to think of it i had 2 goldfish in there before i cleared it out and they were fine but the tank is way to small to have goldfish in tbh. it was only being used as a temp measure coz i kind of got him from a fair as he was in a sorry state but then was really stressed so i had to buy one to keep him company .... anyhoo moving away from my stupidity.... im just really reluctant to put anything in the tank until im sure they are totally harmless.

I also read about some guy with his goldfish and worm problem. I will see if i can pull up the forum and see if it helps you out.

After a couple of minutes of searching im not finding the post. Is it possible that they are fly mites? Im drawing a blank on what they are called but it could also be completely harmless. I read another post where someone had a problem with little white worms but turned out to be harmless and the fish will make work of them as time passes.

from all the pics ive seen of planaria worms though their quite thick and slug like and hang onto the side of the tank, these just seem to swim freely around the tank. i could be wrong but their too damn small and fast to get a pic of.

they do swim about everywhere as well

might sound stupid but ill give it a try lol when our discus got worms they looked like roots swimming about in the tank they are just like you said threads they swimm against the current aswell weird little things but we got rid of them by putting in flubenol thats what they use to worm discus but it also kills tapeworms, helminthic, flukes, and other large parasites thought id tell ya lol :D

Flubendazole (aka flubenol) is available as Wormer Plus made by Kusuri; it's sold mainly for Discus which apparently suffer a lot from worms, says it's suitable for all tropical fish, but may kill snails and invertebrates as well as various worms and other parasites. If your local shop doesn't stock it, you can get it on the internet (google Wormer Plus or try eBay). Wilder suggested it as a possible treatment if my poorly fish showed signs of parasites. I don't think it will affect your filter bacs. Good luck!
