Sounds good to me, aside from the synodontis cats, I'm not sure what kind you're going for. Synos can be anywhere from 3 inches long to a few feet. IMO hoplo cats would do nicely.

Gender to my knowledge doesn't matter

I'd try to get more driftwood decorations than rocky ones for this kind of tank tbh.

Also make sure you don't have any pH bufferers in the tank (like coral sand/gravel) african cichlids like much different water perimeters.

Sex doesn't matter really. A male would probably be a bit bigger though.


As for synodontis... pyjama syno's are ace.

Excellent thank you everyone for you help. One last question while I finalize my tank's new layout. Should I introduce the fish to the tank in any specific order? As in, get the tetras, let them be alone for a week then get the cats and so on? Or is that not particularly important

Add them in the order of aggression. The least aggressive first.

Noted. Although, I just returned from the fish store to see what they had. They have bleeding hearts and tiny blue acaras (biggest was about an inch) but I did not see too many cat fish there. Would it be fine to just add the acaras and tetras together right away seeing as the blue acaras are probably a little smaller than the tetras

My cichlids always ignored catfish, regardless of when I added them, and they were much more aggressive than juvenile blue acaras. You could easily add catfish later on.

If you go for a blue acara get a single one if you end up with a pair (they breed at around 2" in size) they get very agressive. If you want 2 acara go for the aquidenes metae (yellow acara) they are more difficult to breed so if you did end up with a male and female chances are they wont spawn, but if they do they are very placid parents, my pair spawn regularly in a comunity cichlid tank.
