Hi i have a problem with green algae that seems to take over my tank a few weeks back i added a fluval 305 for about 4 days the tank was crystal clear then it started to go green .

It started about 4 inch from the bottom then seemed to go up in bands then getting darker each day then i have done partial water changes and it seems to come back in a few days the light is on 5 hours a day and its placed at the back of the room away from any direct light

Can anyone help?

well a UV unit, could well help. perhaps changing the type of tube you use may help go for one that is less blue.

thanks for the reply mate can you suggest a type of tube i should be looking for?

well i'm not sure how they sell these things, but you will need a light that has a kelvin rating(colour temperature) of less than 4500 kelvin. 5500 kelvin being the rough equivalent to daylight at noon.

this may help, the chart came from this link:

Here are some other ideas that help also instead of buying a new light...(only because they can be expensive)
as far as i know you are supposed to have 30watts per 60ltrs which is about 15gal

Seasalt or salt without iodine or any additives- 1tsp per ltr
20% water change - daily
plants - don't use salt if you get plants though
airation airstone

care should be taken with salt, some fish do not like it, scaleless fish i believe are sensitive to salt.

thanks for the info would this tube be ok?

Interpet Beauty 30w Aquarium Lighting

Designed to bring out the best in the colour of all freshwater aquariums, makes reds, greens, yellows & blues appear richer & more attractive. Long lifespan approx. 10,000 hours. The lower light output and spectrum limits algae growth.

Not too good I'm afraid. To enhance the blue colours, the tube maufaturer has to boost the amount of light from the blue spectrum, which will contribute to your algea growth. Idely, you want a tube the glows a green colour when on, as this is the part of the spectrum that the algea rejects. This stopps the algea photosynthesising, slowly killing it off. This tactic can be detrimental to plant growth though, so bear that in mind.
