Gravel Cleaner Survey

Hi guys! I'm part of a school project in the School of Management in Boston University. Our project is creating a new and modified fish tank gravel cleaner and your input on it would be most helpful. Seems like a good idea and the fact that you could make it from recycled materials.
Mind you i dont quite understand why you need to know my income.

not really sure we need an "improved" cleaner.
its like trying to re-invent the wheel, pointless!

what we have now works fine, costs only small amounts and has no moving parts or bits to break.
honestly if you have the need to keep your hands dry, what you doing fishkeeping?

I guess the income question is about setting a price point.
either way questions like that mean the form will never be filled in by me.

To be honest, I find a my more narrow vacuum picks up more dirt than my wider one (which has a similar head as the one in the survey minus the teeth). The wider one I have is more cumbersome and harder to get around plants and ornaments even if it does remove water quicker.

I also agree that you probably aren't going to improve what is pretty alright in this manner.

And yeah, income was irrelevant to me seeing as I have no idea what our income even would equate to in US$ as that is such a regional thing, even within one country.

To be honest if this is a business venture I think you are trying to improve on something the does not require that much improvement.

I too have answered the survey but have to agree with others - a simple syphon tube is fine for me and if I wanted something posher there's plenty already on the market. That rake attachment would be a nightmare in a planted tank imho.

Also, not only do I strongly object to the question about my income as I've already told you how much I would pay for the cleaner and this is unlikely to correlate to income but #136### do you need to know whether I'm married, have kids etc. Completely irrelevant and a question to which I have picked an answer at random.

I also agree with a few others. It is a product that is trying to improve on something that really doesn't need improving. Also i use an Eheim electric gravel cleaner, which serves my needs perfectly. Its obviously more expensive than a normal syphon type, but it means I can clean the gravel without being dependent on the amount of water that disappears. It does tend to cloud the water, but I have rectified this by putting some filter floss in the debris catcher.

The gravel head is small enough to move around plants and rocks etc, but looking at yours, it looks to be quite large and as danny says above, it would be a nightmare in a planted tank!

its called marketing and research dude, they want to find the correct price and market, if they found that 100 percent of people who like it earned over 50k a yeare they would price it accordingly as ect. its alot more complicated than that though if ya understand what im trying to say

@deftuch - disagree completely. Just because say 100% of people who like it earn $50k+ doesn't mean you can set a price point of $30 for something that is just not worth it.

Just because they earn $50k+ doesn't mean they're a) stupid or b) going to spend $30 on something worth $20.

The questionnaire asks how much you'd be prepared to pay for the cleaner and that is the metric they should be interested in. Income is somewhat irrelevant with that question in mind...

what a gravel vac sells for has got nothing to do with how much you earn, how many kids you have or if you are married.
they are just prying unjustified questions.

anyway you can TRY to explain it as many times as you like, people have aired their views.
as they have with the NEED (more correctly lack of it) for your product.

tell you what?
go away and work out how best to improve the vac.
(dont try and get everyone else to do it.
unless of course you are going to make those who help, beneficiaries of the profit made.
I'll guess that's a NO.)
then bring it to market.

that's how inventors work.
not by conversing for thoughts, and plagiarising the ideas of others.

I have sand in my tropical tanks and crushed coral in my marine tank so have absolutely no need for a gravel cleaner......is that a pointless enough answer to go with some of the pointless questions?

aston martins are way overpriced and the profit mark up is huge! why? because millionaires want them! second or third hand porsches, aston martins go dirt cheap sometimes but there still way above the raw cost of the car... i didnt say it was the only reason, but it is a small factor,

The mark up on these cars is due to the millions of pounds they spend making the best car they can (Im not saying there not overpriced they are!) But bare in mind that buyers of these type of car are a small percentage of the car buyers..

so therefore for them to make a decent profit they will need to have a substancial mark up.

If ford spends 7 million on designing a new car and aston spends the same. Theres going to be more purchases of the ford because its cheaper and its cheaper because of the amount of people buying it. Supply and demand
