In my new tank I am going to breed fish but do not know what type of gravel is best. Should I get the large rocks, the small pebbles or the colored rocks? Which is the closest to the fish's natural habitat and will some fish only breed with certain types of rocks? Or does it not matter.

Im not going to do one particuler type but am starting out with blue gouramis.

from what i've been reading through the breeding posts and books a bare bottom is usually advised.

I my self plan to try and breed some dwarf gouramis, and i will not be putting in gravel or sand as it will be easier to clean without it.

You need gravel for the bacteria to grow in. But I want to get some rocks or small rocks for the tank, not the fru-fru colored rocks. But if I get some big rocks or small rocks, will it be alright? Or will some fish not like it?

if you have an internal filter or a external then you dont need gravel as the sponge in the filter contain by far more bacterial collonies than the gravel thats why the undergravel fliter is not needed (but can be used in certain set ups dont get me wrong !!!)

Oh I see thank you. I do want gravel in there though but does it truly matter? And if I get pebbles or rocks, will any fish care?

it depens on the fish when i had no gravel i had an arrowana

yes i would give them rocks and plants false if you have no gravel (or imo better with the ones attached to bog wood or rocks )

I am going to get live plants and should I get the big rocks maybe the size of a golf ball or the tiny pebbles?
