Am currently in the process of planning my new tank inhabitants and layout and wanted to get 3 dwarf gourami's and a Pearl.

However since looking into things it looks like gourami's may not be the best tank mate to have with real plants?

I'm not going for a heavily planted tank but still dont want the whole lot ripped to pieces...

What are your experiences?

most gouramis are fine with plants. Giant gouramis will eat them but pearl, gold, blue, & dwarf varieties will all be fine and not cause any damage

My blue gouramis love my heavily planted 29g. They love to swim around the leaves of the plants and sometimes just rest on them and chill! One time I was staring at one of them who was staring back at me. It was just resting on a leaf and not moving. Was quite funny to see. :D

My dwarf gourami love plants. He picks little specks of food and algae off them , and does swimming circuits through them. He has never nibbled or eaten any. Same goes for my Opaline gourami.

Actually as they are territorial, plants provide hiding places and make it easier for them to delimit territories

I agree. To me plants are a must if you are getting 2 or more Gouramis. Some floating plants are really appreciated too! These will help secure their bubble nests and (in my personal experience) help prevent the possibility of pulling up other plants for nest making.
