So after about two weeks of a fishless cycle we finally added some zebra danios and the tiniest little sucker fish ever. We have had them for a week and really want to add a couple more fish as we also have our 33 gallon tank up and ready to go(we are cycling it for 2-3 weeks just to make sure everything is good) I want to add some more colorful fish but the petstore says we can't add different species(because of the different food they are on) what other kind of danios or the same species can we add into the tank. For the longest time i have wanted like some shrimp in a tank but i don't know if i can do that. We also have one danio(I call it Rio) that is chasing all the other ones away and it's getting alot chubbier. How can we keep it away from all the other fish so that they can eat and get healthy and fat too?

wait they told you that you cant add different fish to the danio tank?

Yeah they told us we can only add the danio species since if we other types of fish they may eat a different food then what they are eating and get sick. Like i wanted to know if we could put goldfish in with them and they said no because they eat different types of foods. They also told us to only feed the sucker fish small bits of cucumber or squash.

you can't add different fish, cuz they eat different food?????????????!!!!!!!!!!! What are those guys talking about?? That is not true when considering the types of fish that are sold at the lfs. most "tropical fish" that you find at your lfs have mostly the same water & food requirements. You can add neons, rasboras, cardinals, etc and they all eat the same flake food. I have 7 rasboras, 7 neons, 5 cory cats, 1 gold gourami, and 1 snail and they are living peacefully together.

Don't add any goldfish though; they have different water requirements and make a mess of the water (ammonia-wise). Remember to get "schools" of fish that are not aggressive toward each other, and you'll be fine.

Do some research before adding any fish

Good luck

Yeah that's what the lady told my husband when he went the first time to get the fish. We went back today since i had a question about one of the zebra danio's being aggressive and eating all the food. We ended up leaving with a rock shrimp, two i believe little african dwarf frogs and 5 tetra's.

We ended up deciding when we move all the other fish to the 33 gallon we will use the 20 gallon to put the goldfish in.

I actually find goldfish harder to look after, they grow big, common ones do and make an awful mess of the tank so regular water changes/gravel vac is required

When you say cycling, what do you mean? Letting the filter run for a while or adding a source of ammonia and monitoring the water stats?

Zebra Danios tolerate cooler water than most tropical fish, however there is a crossover point, and you can keep most fish you would see in a typical lfs with them. What fish do you like? People on here can tell you the compatability issues if any. Never listen to a lfs advice, they say anything to make the sale!

I'm a bit more concerned about your 33g tank being "cycled" and ready to go, especially after 2-3 weeks? Please tell us what you mean!

Don't tell me ... P@H or PetSmart, right?
