Just to let you know the plant he is in front of isnt a true water plant its a houseplant and will rot after a few weeks if not sooner.

Thanks for the comments... strange about the plant as I bought it from the tropical fish section of the fish store I go to. I will give them a call and ask them about the plant. Thanks for the heads up though .

Thanks for all your great comments, I am really pleased with the tank and the betta . It would be strange if the plant wasn't aquatic as it was being kept in water at the store and was selected by a member of staff... oh well. Anyone know why whenever I get grass like plants they tend to go translucent and eventually die...? Is it the lighting I have? thanks.

Its not strange that they sell these plants as aquatic. The most popular is the goose foot plant and i believe yours is a member of the dracaena family and is commonly sold as lucky bamboo.

Pretty fish. As for the plant., I have always heard that anything with varigated leaves was not an aquatic plant.

Edit: It's hard to tell about the decoration in the middle but if it has any sharp or rough edges on it, keep a close eye on Merlin as he may tear or rip his tail and fins.

The plant in question grows very nicely on my window sill. It is a terrestrial plant, that's for sure, and don't let the petstore tell you any different. Many petstores commonly sell submerged plants. They are not true aquatics.

Actually, there is a cultivar of Hygro that has varigated leaves. I have a specimen of this in my 10g and it is very lovely as well as being a true aquatic plant.

I find that in bowls, java fern does well with minimum light, but if you can get a light on your bowl, preferable compact florescent, I highly recommend salvinia natans or minima. Like java fern, salvinia is a fern, but it is a floating plant, and does very well in my betta bowls. They also provide the betta with an anchor for bubblenesting.

By the way, Merlin is a lovely fish. I love his coloration. When you see a beautiful one, it makes you appreciate a fine VT.

You have a very lovely betta there indeed!

There are a number of different non-aquatic plants that I've seen for sale in one of the chain lfs near me. They last for a little while under water, but not usually for long. Here's an article about this:
