Got A New 80 Litre Tank... These Inhabitants Good?

I could get 8 I guess, and still get 8 Endlers too. Are you still sure all this can fit into an 80 litre tank?

Thought I'd get 4 Otos instead of 5.

  • 12 Green Neon Tetras
  • 8 Black Bar Endlers
  • 8 Panda Corys
  • 4 Otocinclus
  • Cherry Shrimp

Just been to LFS to find that the model tank I have is either an 85 or 100 litre! They are out of stock of the tank I have at the moment and they can't remember how many litres it is, but they are getting more in soon so I can confirm it.

Also, I told the folks at my LFS that I was thinking about having Green Neons and they said that they aren't as green as they seem. Also, they are caught in the wild. I would rather preserve fish in the wild and buy ones that have been bred in captivity. So I thought I'd get Ember Tetras instead, or something else, not too sure. I'm still getting Endlers, Corys etc.

I think I will get Embers.

If it is a 100 litre, how many Sparkling Gouramis could I have in there as well? They're very small, so I was thinking around 4...?

I take it you are planting the tank up as your looking at shrimps.  How about introducing an Apple snail or even a couple of dwarf Crayfish.  Adds some variety into the balance of the tank.

The selection of fish looks good, there are some nice Rasboras around if you want a change from neons (i've gone off neons recently, but thats just me)

Well, I am planning to have a well planted tank with Java Moss, so hopefully the Cherry Shrimps should be happy and thrive. I don't know about having snails and there is no where near me that sells Crayfish. Plus, Crayfish might attack/nip at the small fish and Shrimp I am planning to have.

I am planning to have Ember Tetras, Black Bar Endlers, Panda Corys, Otocinclus, Bamboo Shrimp and RCS. If my tank is a 100 litre tank (still have to confirm this), then there is still room for something else. I was considering Sparkling Gouramis, but apparently they can become aggressive towards fish with flashy fins and see them as rivals - ruling them out because I would like Endlers. Plus, I decided not to have Neons or Green Neons a while ago.

you have a good mix looking at your list.  Your probably right about the crayfish, especially as the redclaw is the only one available in UK.  Shrimps are great, i have a small colony of 12 (and growing). Post a pic once you have them all settled in, the tank should look good.

Thank you. I will not be setting the tank up for a while yet, maybe a few weeks, not until I know how many litres it is exactly. I still need to get the basics like plants, wood, rocks, sand etc.

If it was a 100 litre, do you know of any 'centre piece' fish that would go well with the list of fish I have?

Maybe a trio of Sparkling Gourami/Honey Gourami/Scarlet Badis?
Or Badis Badis a very interesting fish, although slightly more difficult to keep.

Tek oot.

Never heard of those... they sound interesting. Would they be good with Endlers and schooling fish?

They should be fine I see nothing wrong with them.

Tek oot.

Wow, they are beautiful, and they sound like good community fish. I will think about them, thank you. :)

I have been thinking about the Scarlet Badis a lot. In fact, I went to my LFS to have a look around and they have Scarlet Badis! I didn't buy any (not buying fish for a while yet!), but I've come to really, really like them. Done quite a bit of research on them, and they prefer tank mates that are calm and quiet. So, I'm ruling out Ember Tetras and going for Lambchop Rasboras, because Rasboras are recommended and they are the best kind in my opinion. I'm not sure, however, about keeping Endlers with the Badis. They can be quite fast and skittish, but they do calm down though. Panda Corys should be ok, and Cherry Shrimp is a big thumbs up.

Would Endlers be ok with Badis?

Also another question regarding tank mates for Scarlet Badis - What are good tank mates for them? I know Lambchop Rasboras are perfect as are RCS and Bamboo Shrimp, but am wondering about either Panda or Pygmy Corys. What other tank mates could fill in the last space? Am thinking of 3 male Scarlet Badis, 12 Lambchop Rasboras, Pygmy/Panda Corys, shrimp. Something else as well maybe.

Had a rethink and made a conclusion on the stocking list -

  • 3 Scarlet Badis (male)
  • 12-15 Mosquito Rasboras
  • 8 Pygmy Corys
  • 4 Otocinclus
  • 1 Bamboo Shrimp
  • Cherry Shrimp
