Goop on driftwood

I got a peice of wood that gets the same goop you're describing... whenever it appears, I just take it out and scrub it down. I have no idea what causes it. Sometimes it would appear weekly, other times monthly. That wood is now in a brackish tank, and have yet to see any more goop on it. I don't think it's anything to worry about, didn't seem to affect any of my fish.

Is it truly driftwood? Sounds more like it's just a piece of regular wood trying to decompose underwater. Do you have any plecs in the tank, and if so, do they pay much attention to the wood?
I bought it from Petsmart and it was labeled as aquarium-safe driftwood, and looks much like the driftwood I've seen sold in many other petshops, so I'm assuming that's what it is. I don't have any plecs... I don't think Marie the midas would approve of them

From the pic I would say that is 'Mopani' which is an African swamp root, I have lots of it. When first putting it in a tank I have seen a white/blue mould type growth appear then die off after a few days, with no apparent harm to anything in the tank.

try a plec they hurt nothing, they burry under things mine made a good home right under the bogwood i am afraid it will drop on it
A plec would hurt nothing, but there's plenty in my tank to hurt a plec!
I'd be hard pressed to find one locally that's too big for my oscar to eat, and my bad tempered midas would probably rip it to shreds or at least annoy it to death :p
I'm definitely not going to risk getting a plec until I have to move Marie to her own tank again in the future.

jflowers: Thanks for the input. I've been lazy lately, so I wasn't planning to do anything about the wood for a few days, since the goop doesn't seem to be harming anything... hopefully it'll just die off like yours did
