what should i look for in a breeding pair? i want to start to breed 2 of my bettas....but i dont know if they are right for each other....*love at first blup* i have them in bowls next to each other and i am getting ready to put them into the community tank...but i think i want to get a better female to breed spencer to....more info on spencer and other bettas @ www.bettababy.piczo.com

hrm. It's hard to say if the female fits well with the male, because there are no pics of her :look:... but, generally, a good pair compliments each other well in both finnage and coloring. For example, you wouldn't breed a cardinal red Betta to a blue Betta... that would just result in Bettas with red wash, which is very undesirable. You also wouldn't spawn a HM with a VT, because obviously most if not all of the fry would be VT's.

It's hard to tell from the pics ~ is Spencer blue and red? Definitely think about how desirable his coloring is to buyers, not just your own tastes. Do you know how old he is? Generally, Bettas are in their prime from 4-9 months. Do you know what genotypes he carries, what his parents look like, etc? You will need a Delta/HM female to spawn with him, unless you want an assortment of mixed tail types. I would recommend that you join your local Betta club and attend an auction, or contact one of the members that has Bettas available. You can also buy VERY nice sibling pairs at Bettatalk.com or Aquabid.com! Sibling pairs are good for beginners, because you know exactly (or almost exactly) what you'll be getting in your spawn.

Also, did you mean you wanted to spawn them in a community tank?... cos that wouldn't be good

They can't live together in there either... males and females can't be housed together long-term :)
