what temperature will goldfish stand up to?

i have a tank with no heater as yet, but want something in there until my bad boys arrive.

what dya reckon? i have heard peopl ehave goldfish in freezing water, is this correct?

At the end of the day Goldfish are no different than Koi or tench so if they can stand the water being so cold during the winter then I m sure the goldfish should be ok, after all some people have goldfish in their pond and thats when they breed like anyhting. And on the other end of the scale I knew someone who kep a couple of goldfish in with his tropical fish ( 80 degrees) in fact it seemed to bring out the colour more.

My son's coldwater tank is now in his bedroom which is south facing and it gets quite hot in there even with a blackout blind. The temperature so far this year, considering its only February and we're in England, has reached 78 degrees. His Black Moor is fine and dandy in there and is growing well. I heard fancies can take the higher temperature though. Maybe ask on the coldwater section?

goldfish take a wide range of temperatures between 10 and 25c depending on the type. anything less than 10 and they will start to hibernate. fancy goldfish need the higher temperature range and this is why they dont do well in ponds in the winter.
a constant temperature is better than one that fluctuates. maybe keeping the heater on the lowest setting may be enough for your fishy friend

A pond can freeze over and the goldfish will be fine just as long as they have a place to swim.
