I don't excatly believe that either. I have danios, WCMMs, green cories, a weather loach and a pleco in with my goldfish. They've been living together for almost a year.

ok,ive heard off sevral people on TFF htought that it is true and these people are nearly always right!i cant remember who though but i know more than one person had mentioned it

mmm ok, I usually only tend to believe things like that if I can see it documented and don't really go by hear-say. And I'd most definitely not vehemently agree with someone unless I had proof. So I'd be interested to find out actually.....

Umm, okay, why don't LFS or even chain stores like Walmart keep goldfish and tropicals together if it's okay? If you don't trust what you're being told here, I'd go to another source. Personally, I just looked at about 6 different websites concerning tropicals and goldfish. None of them recommend keeping them together.

Oi, take a deep breath ! I never said I think it's a good think keeping them together. In fact I totally agree with that - not keeping them together, that is. However I'm quite curious to know about the statement regarding the "toxic slime coating" on goldfish, and that being poisonous to tropical fish. I would just like to have some more information on that, however can find absolutely non specifically relating to the above.

Do you require documentation as to the diverse temperature needs of goldfish and tropicals or only as regards the toxic slime coat?
If the former, I can give page references to the 5 books on fishkeeping I have currently got on my desk- for starters, I know there are more books in the local library.
With the latter, afraid I cannot help. I suppose for most fishkeeping handbooks, once they have established that the temperature requirements are incomatible, that's it as far as they are concerned; they assume that nobody is going to do it.

It's the latter I'm interested I'm afraid. The former I can get infinite information on ;)

OK folks

Regarding the Goldfish and Danios read on:

http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_goldf.php

"Tankmates: Typically goldfish do best in a species only tank. Although it is quite possible to keep other fish with them. But you must be careful in the fish that you choose. They must be placid enough, have similar water requirements and be able to handle the lower temps (18-25°C) enjoyed by goldfish. I have had mounds of success with Zebra Danios, they are relatively close relatives, and do have a lot of the same requirements as goldfish. Apple snails are marvelous algae eaters for the goldfish tank. White Clouds would probably do OK in a gold tank as well. I wouldn’t put any of the more strictly "tropical" fish like tetras, and definitely not any cichlids. "

Looks as though some other fishkeepers have tried it with much success. I think the Slime thing is one of those myths.

They get along quite nicely in my tank and if it weren't for the ammonia issue I would keep them together.
