You only gravel vac once a month? So you have a months worth of uneaten food and poo in your tank - thats very bad. You should have a thorough gravel vac at least once a week.

Also you are rinsing your filter media too much! Only rinse it approx once a month or when your filter flow lessens indicating blockages. Are your water stats good?

I was told that as I have a trickle filter that I should rinse the floss off once a week, and some people on here with the same tank as me replace it once a week. I never rinse the noodles, but if I left the floss without rinsing it would be gross-perhaps the OP has a similar type of filter?!

I agree Carole, polishing pads/floss get very dirty. I do try and keep them in the filter for about a month, but then i am using external filters.
