Here is my scenario: I just bought a new 40G tank and want to have it ready for fish as soon as possible. I have a 10G that will no longer be used. If I use the water from the 10G, transport the plants, rocks, substrate, and even filter, will the 40G already be seeded enough to handle new fish? Here is the other problem: The new tank is 60 miles away.. Will the bacteria in the old water, rocks, etc., survive the trip? ANY advice at all would be extremely appreciated! Thanks!

Mike

Well bacteria can last as long as 2 hours withought water/and or air before it starts to die off and release posions in your tank. Just have ur bacteria pad or w/e kinda biological thing you have in your tank and put it in a lil bucket of tank water. It should be fine. Everything else should be fine and you can even buy some medicines for your fish like stress coat just to acclimate them healthier to your 40 gallon.

It depends what fish are in the 10 gallon now, & what fish you plan on putting in the 40. You could do a straight switch, all the inhabitants, filter, heater, gravel, etc, from the 10 to the 40 without any trouble.

If you plan on moving cycled filter media, gravel & other tank equipment any distance, just keep it wet. It will be fine for a few hours. Watewr holds very little bacteria, it's all in the media, gravel, & other tank ornaments.
