Ok I currently have an Eheim Classic 2213, I'm upgrading to the 2217.

What do I need to do to upgrade this and not cause a cycle?

Squeeze the old and new sponges together in some aquarium water to seed the bacteria on the new sponge.

Then if you can, run both filters in the tank for around 2 weeks to give the bacteria time to grow in the new tank. Then you should be able to remove the old filter without causing much of a cycle.Keep an eye on your readings though.

The 2213 & 2217 take the same media, the filter pads are larger for the 2217. Take all the old media from the 2213 & add it, along with some new media, to the 2217. You are now running all the cycled bio media in a new filter, preventing any cycling problems.
