i am getting a new betta after a recent death of my favorite betta magic he was the best i really miss him and i know he will be the partier up in the heavens so i will always have 3 betta's so i am needing some advice on getting a healthy one because magic was a survivor from many sicknesses that is why he was so special.

I'm sorry to hear about Magic

I've always gotten my bettas from the pet shop, and I've always checked for these things: 1) clear skin, no spots or abrasions; 2) healthy-looking fins, no evidence of fin rot; and 3) a decent amount of "activity," I've tended to steer away from fish that sat listlessly at the bottom of their cups and won't move at all, even when being picked up to have a closer look. I'm sure the experts will be along and can give you a much better idea of what to look for, but these have worked for me in the past.

so sorry for the loss of Magic :rip: My male bettas have been bought on-line from highly recommended and knowledgeable betta breeders. I have been very lucky as they are both very easy going, laid back boys. One is in with 15 females and has not shown any signs of aggression at all! My third boy was sold as a female. I bought a group of 6 from my local fish shop. This one was always bigger and bolshier than the others. It was 2-3 weeks after getting them that I had it confirmed on this forum that she was a he!! My lfs is very good and their fish are always very healthy. The staff are very good and know what they are talking about. That makes such a difference as a lot of shops have staff members who seem to know nothing about the fish they are selling :grr:

I hope that you manage to get yourself a lovely new boy soon. Best of luck

I am in America, and the major pet store chains do keep them in cups. Certainly not an ideal life :(
