I was at Petco today and asked a guys about these "Glofish". He told me that they were the worlds first genetically engineered fish. They take the genes from sea enemenies (sp?) and put them in the fish.

I can't see how this is cruel. But it certainly is weird and out of the ordinary.

Imagine if these were let out in the wild, and they reproduced!

There are already a few threads on the forums debating about these fish. If you are really interesting in the arguments for and against them I would highly recommend searching for those.

I know some people are seriously against this but I had to buy some of these guys since they're so different. I already had some zebra danio's in my tank and so I got a half dozen of the pink guys (and girls!). They the same fish, just a differnt color and yes they do glow under black lights, its pretty cool to turn all the lights off and turn a black light on over the tank and just see these intense pink fish swimming around. I was worried my black ghost knife might find them a tasty treat but I've had him for years and he's been quite peaceful even with the smallest of fish in the tank. So far so good!
I think I would be more against it if there was clear harm to the fish, either their lives being shortened drastically or getting sick often but for the most part they're suppose to be just as lively and loveable as the normal zebras. Supposedly the regular danios wont mate with the colored ones, they dont find each other attractive? I heard that the modified ones dont have the stamina that the natural ones have but its hard to judge in a tank where they all seem extremely active and healthy. Oh well.....

i dont like it, i just dont, if something isnt done about it we arent going to stop, we are going to continue adding this gene to higher animals until it reaches to an animal that someone actually cares about like a dog, then finally someone is going to step in.

Yeah. I have come to the conclusion that it's just sick. Natural animals are much more beautiful. And corporations are just trying to get a quick buck from these GloFish.

I wouldn't condemn anyone for owning a glo fish but as Musho mentioned when will it stop….. I think humans or anyone for that fact playing God is a very scary thing and I am sure very serious and dangerous diseases could result from projects gone wrong, and it is almost certain that animal or even human will suffer from these experiments.

People keep fish n a home aquaeium because they are beautiful. As beautiful as nature or God intended them to be. So why on Earth mess around with them? By the looks of it, you guys that want some, want them because they are a novelty. Bloody idiotic!
Stuff gets messed around with like this and our childrens children will not know what is real any more....

Have these fish been tested over several decades? I doubt it. So how then can we know the long term damage that this might have on real fish stocks when some WILL get put in the wild!

We should keep God's work to God Himself. I wouldn't trust anyone changing our beautiful fish :). Because it is certainly not for better, but for worse.

i think to give a child a smile filled with wonder as he watches in the dark staring at fish that are glowing is worth it,

there is always a good and bad u kno?
