Genetically Engineered Fish

Quotage from the site

"United States Fish & Wildlife Service, found no evidence that our fluorescent zebra fish pose any more threat to the environment than wild-type zebra fish. If you would like to read the FDA statement regarding our fish, please click here."

after reading their website they seem harmless enough.... they are more natural then FLOWERHORNS. and i like flowerhorns....

and these glowing flouresent genes are currently in deepsea fish. and theyre all natural. so really this is alot of hype about nothing...

The fish are sterile to begin with, its impossible for them to reproduce.

if they are so sterile then how does my lfs have 2 tanks full of one month old green orange and pink fry??there are even afew in the tanks that look as though they will be normal colored zebra danios. i first saw them just a week or two old. i even talked to my favorite employee there who confirmed that they were born there, and mentioned that there was some sort of patent on them that was preventing them from being able to sell them.

Also in adition, sterility is an ailment that can cause tons of suffering. You may not feel sterility but when you try to have a baby and it just won't happen, won't your instincts feel betrayed, and won't you feel more than just emotionally awkward.

we are talking about fish, and more importantly, about egg scatterers who will eat their own eggs and fry, they are unlikely to notice or care that they are sterile. You are comparing humans to fish and we are not very much alike.

although, i don't believe they ARE sterile. Aren't there stories everywhere of people breeding them?

[edit] tut tut, look what you've done, fry lover! resurrecting thread to up your post count! shameful, really ;)

Nor are horses. Or chickens or turkeys.

=============================

Horses chickens, horses, and turkeys are almost identical to their wild counterparts actually. Very little change. Look at the wild bronocs, Heath Hens, and wild turkeys, not a huge difference other than some variations in color.

Also to the person who says they are sterile and won't reproduce. Did you know that 1 percent of donkeys, parrot fish and other not natural and "sterile" animals are actually not sterile. As a species they may be sterile, but if the individuals who are not sterile find each other, they will reproduce. A famous qoute from Jurassic park may or may not put it in perspective. Life WILL find a way. Just wait and see. Also in adition, sterility is an ailment that can cause tons of suffering. You may not feel sterility but when you try to have a baby and it just won't happen, won't your instincts feel betrayed, and won't you feel more than just emotionally awkward.

Most organisms have about 3 drives. 3 things keep them alive. To Eat, Reproduce, Survive. Sterlizing them takes away 1/3 of what makes them a living being.
They're not sterile from a genetic malfunctions, like mules or ligers, they are given a small dose of radiation.

How do you think they are born? They have a breeding colony of them, they just make them sterile before shipping out. Those fish are just young.

this is sickning, now i know what i stoped eating meat, animal cruelty needs to stop i don't care what the reason is. how would they like it if someone did that to them or their child, don't think so right!

but what about it is cruel, omega? the glofish act just the same as any other danio, and will school with regular danios as though nothing were different about them. Their quality of life isn't actually affected and it doesn't cause them any pain.

i think of all the arguments, the cruelty one has the least credibility.

And it's not even like they pose a danger to the enviroment. If some idiot realeases a bunch of them that are able to breed, they'll be picked off by predators most likely within the day.

I don't understand what's so frightening about genetic manipulation. It can do so much good in the world! Curing cancer, AIDS, mabye even hunger!

you'll never see a cure for aids or cancer, afterall look howmuch money they bring in for the government to make meds which those meds do more harm than good. and it is cruelty to the fish who knows what the long-term effects are, do they know?

they ought to know, this is far from new. These fish have been in the shops since 2004 in the US PFK article and would have been engineered and studied long before they went on the market. the lifespan of danios is generally 2-5 years (according to a quick internet search) so the first generation is going to be dead or very near the maximum average lifespan. They would know the long-term effects by now.

[edit] and they aren't sterile, according to PFK PFK reader breeds GM fish

If that were to happen here it would go against Darwin. Those fish stand out very much in a crowd, something tells me they are going to be subject to predation before the natural fish.
