I'm considering these two units together for my new set up. My concern is the corrugated pipes from the filter. Presumably, if cut in the middle to allow fitment of the heater, the corrugations will not seal. Has anyone else got this combination and if so, how did they get around this issue?

you will find that the FX5 pipe work is much wider than any in line heater too so they arent compatable.

Hmmm, looks like this is the last straw as far as the FX is concerned. I sense a pair of EX in my future. Would you suggest one or two heaters for 450l?

I use one 300 watt which fits straight onto the ex1200 pipe.

Iv set mine to 26 degrees c and put the thermometer on the opposite side of the tank to the inlet elbow (I don't use the spray bar because it restricts flow) which the heater is connected to. That way I know the water is getting pumped around the tank at the right temp and I have no cold spots in the tank :)

My tank is also 450 litres. It's a 5 foot jewel rio 400 and I find 1 300 watt external heater more than enough.

Thanks for that db. Do you connect your 2 filters together so you only have 1 inlet and 1 outlet or are they completely separate? Have you thought about enlarging the outlet holes in the spray bar to increase the throughput?
