Hey guys! I have this large piece of driftwood that I found on the beach many years ago. Since it's so big, I soaked it in scalding hot water for a couple days, instead of boiling it. I put it in the 17 gallon with my livebearers, but decided that it didn't suit my tank set up, so I took it out. Well, now that I'm getting a couple kribs, (I already have one) I decided to put the driftwood back in to give it a little more natural look, and to lower the ph a tiny bit. The only problem is, now, there are these fluffy balls that are coming off of the driftwood, almost like the wood is shedding skin or something. It looks hideous, and is worrying me a little, to be honest.

Here's the best picture I could get, sorry, it's pretty bad.....

The stuff I'm talking about is that brown stuff stuck in between the plants.

Hope you can notice it. What is it?

Thanks in advance! :D

It's pretty hard to see what the gunk is coming from the wood in the first pic..

I have recently added a new twisted wood branch to my 4ft and it had a few lumps leach from the side and a bit of slim but I syphoned any substances off when doing the water changes and have not had a problem so far. As long as the wood is suitable for aquarium use, I'm sure you will be fine with regular water changes.

I'm honestly not sure if it's suitable for aquarium use, seems I found it on the beach, but my livebearers were perfectly fine with it in the tank for a couple months.

Thanks.

i put a log in my tank from the beach, worst thing that could happen is parasites or diseases, but you scalded it so they should be dead and gone.

Which beach did you get it from? lol

Yeah, well if that's the only threat, I'm not worried. I thought there may be toxins or something. lol

Thanks!

i got it from, well not a beach, but on the trail to bear lake in the whiteshell, me and a couple friends found some awesome rocks and driftwood there.

Awesome! Nice find! Do you know if there's a difference between freshwater driftwood and saltwater driftwood? (Like between sea driftwood, and lake driftwood) I've always wondered. lol

sea driftwood would probably just have salt in it, but you could probably get the salt out if you just soaked it for a long time, i dont know though...
