I returned home to find Sunbeam on his side, breathing, with half of his body covered with a thick white/cloud colored film. I finally have time to buy aquarium salt..but what can I give him to help with this?

When was the last time you cleaned his tank out/did a water change(+how much)? Grey/white film on his slimecoat means that he either has an infection or somthing is irritating him in the water.

If its fuzzy, it could be fungus or a bacterial infection. Add salt and try to diagnose his problem. Try if you can to post a picture so we can see.

The water is fresh, but this fish is still recovering from a long jump/fall from his bowl so I wouldn't be surprised if he'd be prone to infections. I bought and added some "betta fix" for his bowl and purchased some aquarium salt--He is in a one gallon Aquaview (with the air stone releasing bubbles at half notch) and I'm wondering how much salt is safe? The directions instruct a tea spoon be added for every 5 gallons--Would this translate to about 4 granuals of salt then? Also, is there any reason I should not attempt to remove the fungus? It looks large enough to grab some, perhaps, with a net.

Sounds like fungus. If half his body is covered it may be too late for him. Turn the temp down to help slow the growth of the fungus. You'll have to treat it quick cause it kills quick. Jungle Fungus clear is some good stuff. Someone else might know something better. Good luck with him!

NO don't scrape it off. Just try treating it with the salt. If it is like, a half gallon tank, maybe a pinch of salt would be suffice. Just try to make him comfortable. Fungus is nasty. Good luck!

yup, I agree. Fungus.
Salt helps for now but try to get some meds immediately. Maracyn, Jungle Clear, Jungle Fungus Eliminator. I'm sure there are others but those are the ones that come to mind. Just look at the back of the boxes, usually they'll list the diseases it treats. Some boxes will even describe the symptoms.

Good luck

Oh, forgot to mention, the salt says 1 heaping Tablespoon per 5 gallons. 1 Tablespoon is equal to 3 teaspoons so for one gallon I'd put just a little over 1/2 teaspoon.

I can't get over how quickly it grew! Thanks for all your help. I hope he pulls through :)
