Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

With the spiders you have there, you're a brave man, I'm telling you. You ever see huntsman spiders in your house? I'd be outta there like a shot and never be able to return, even though I know they're harmless to me!
We used to go to Guilderton as kids (it's about 110km north of Perth). The family had a holiday home up there. It had lots of bush around it and there were huntsman spiders in there. We would wake up at night and these 5-6 inch spiders would be crawling across the ceiling above us.

We got them in Perth too and they come in mainly during summer to escape the heat outside. You would chase them around and catch them in a bucket and take them outside. Sometimes they got stroppy (angry) and would rear up. You could see the venom dripping off their fangs.

GGGAAAAAAHHH!
I hate that I'm scared of spiders. I work hard to challenge and overcome my phobia, because I know it's illogical, spiders are fascinating in their own right, and an important part of the ecosystem. Plus giving in to the phobia only reinforces it. I can hold a tarantula. Held a goliath bird eating spider once, which reared up while in my hands and made me think I was gonna die... I can handle small - medium spiders, and we don't have dangerous/risky ones here.

But huntsman... I just couldn't! Being both massive, and fast, just isn't fair.
They're not a high venom risk to humans though, right? Unless someone happened to have an allergic reaction maybe?

No, never heard of anyone dying from a huntsman spider bite.

Most of the huntsman spiders end up wearing a thong (flipflop not underwear). SWAT - SPLAT

I can understand that! Have seen youtube vids of people trying to capture huge huntsman to take them outside, and man, the size of them and the way they move! It's gotta feel like "one of us has to die, this cannot end well" kinda thing.

Sorry for chatting and taking this off topic! Trying to think of another relatively unknown fact, but my mind keeps giving me the ones that are not family friendly... so I'll duck out for now until I think of or stumble across a cool one. :)

Did you know almost all spiders are venomous? (But most of them aren't harmful to humans)
Yah... and did you know daddy long legs could easily kill a human with its venom but it's fangs are too small to get a grip on our skin! Crazy!

Daddy longleg spiders can pierce human skin but they are not venomous to us.

People think they are venomous because they can kill a redback (black widow) spider but they rarely fight each other and prefer to avoid confrontations. All spiders can kill each other and their venom can do that. The biggest spider usually wins.

IIRC they are not even spiders, but some other order or taxonomy thingum.

No they can't bite people but they COULD kill one if they were able to bite... That's what I've always known at least

Depends on where in the world you are, what you call a "daddy long legs". Here in the UK, I've heard people call cellar spiders that (which are a proper spider) while in my area, it's one of the common names for a crane fly, which isn't a spider at all, and just buzz about uselessly, dangling their legs in the air and accidentally banging into walls, windows, humans etc.
That's the trouble with common names. Can be talking about different creatures with a shared common name. :)
