Fry And Filter Intake

at what age do you think fry are strong enough and smart enough to stay away from a filter intake?

With my gupps I let them birth in the 30 gal main tank and I have only lost about 3 do to filter. they are brought up with currents but in any case if you don't birth in the main tank I would say about 1 or 2 weeks depending on how you feed. they are still strong swimmers as fry but they will tire out if they have no other place to hide from the intake i would say a 10 gal. tank. would be good. I use to put my fry in a 5 gall w/ filtration and the current was pretty bad so I would turn it off for the first week and than turn it on and it was fine I just had to do lots of water changes couse the fry need better water conditions and in that small of a tank it was a must.

I believe the fry swim strong enough to escape when they are paying attention, but I think other things may cause them to slip past the point of no return. If you have a specific fry tank, generally sponge filters are recommended. If you don't want to change filters, taking an extra filter sponge, putting a slit in it, and sliding it over the intake tube helps out a lot. Plus it adds more filtration.

The sponge works, or...you could get a pair of pantyhose, cut off a foot and tie it around there. It works for my convict tank.

People have mentioned to me that pantyhose restrict flow more so than the sponge method. I suppose it depends on what kind you use as I am not well versed in legging wear.

i got some of my mums tights and put them on with an elastic band

LOL...I'm not either. And, in all honesty....I had my girlfriend pick them up for me.

well i ended up putting a stocking on it and it worked out fine

Great. Nylon stockings, right? Cotton will eventually deteriorate, although that will take quote some time.
