I use a heater in mine during the winter but i live in a big cold old house
Sand would be fine and regular water changes as long as you use water that has stood for at least 24 hrs.If the house is warm all the time you could get away without a heater as i dont use one through the summer

I honestly cant answer that but knowing ACFs & ADCFs they will probably find a way out as they are great escape artists .I know my ACFs escaped on the first night i had them
