Well...I went over to walk my friend's dog today, as they are out of town. As I was walking her, she started going frantic, and I found this small little Cockatiel right next to the road. :( His head looked terrible...bright red. I took him to the car, and put him in a little box I had. He didn't move much at all, but immediately turned around and went to sleep. I had a few quick things I needed to do before I left the area, but I called the vet and made an appointment. I got him over to the vet, and the vet basically said that all the skin is off his head, and his skull is exposed. :X The bird is probably in shock now, and the vet is not sure he can make it through the exam, so he's going to go slow with it. He is going to be kept at the vets office for tube feeding, as he's way underweight, and he's in the ICU now. Hopefully he's going to be okay. I'm supposed to call them at 6:30 tonight so I'll let you all know what he says....

*crosses fingers* He is such a sweetie pie. I really hope he's going to be okay...

Awww, poor little darling. Bless your heart and I will keep him in my thoughts.

Thanks guys. :D I can't stand to see any helpless animal hurt or suffering, so it was the least I could do.

Anyhoo, I talked to the vet and he said he's doing well. They have been tube-feeding him and he's been keeping it down. He's also moving around more. They said he can come home tomorrow afternoon, but he'll need drops on his head twice a day as he has no skin, just his skull. They expect him to recover though. Guess who has themselves a new pet... I'm going to check around the area first though, and see if there are any 'Missing's for a Cockatiel. If there aren't, he's welcome to live with me. I'm not sure anyone else would be willing to look at the horror that is his head and put drops on it. :X

I'm getting my camera back soon from minor repairs, so if it isn't too gory I'll get some pics for ya'll.

Hello there, I sure hope this little guy pulls through. I am sure he's been through a horrific experience and he was SO lucky to have found you, to do everything you could for him like that. Birds have a very soft spot in my heart. I breed tiels (and lovebirds, conures and budgies) and handfed all my babies, plus I handfeed for a large parrot breeder. My 2 tiel 'pets' are now 12 and 13 yrs old, plus I have 54 total. These 2 are a bonded pair and have been together for 10 yrs. Both were 'my' babies. Their names are Runt and Happy.

Please keep us updated on how he is. I hope all gets weel and he makes you a wonderful pet!

The vet is saying now he may have had a run-in with a car. Ouch. :(

Thanks for the kind words, Deanna. :) It's really looking like he will pull through, currently, which is great. That's so cute about your 'tiels.

I'll definitely keep you all updated on him. We'll see how he looks tomorrow, last I saw him he was covered with dried blood and basically in shock, so it's not going to be hard to look better then that.

Thanks Timmy. I, too, am sad he didn't make it, but they think he may have had some internal injury from the head trauma. Better for him to go to a better place, then go on living in pain.

:rip: Sooo sorry to hear about the poor little cockatiel! I was just reading this thread and looking forward to hearing how well he was doing! It is such a shame! At least you gave him a chance which is more than what some people would do!

At least he has gone to a better place to be with new friends

Thanks Natsuko. I was also looking forward to raising him and helping him get well again but some things aren't ment to be. I'm just glad he died peacefully, and without pain (to speak of).

I'm now $200 further away from my 125g, but hey.

Hey good for you though.. Just out of curiosity.. How much are you getting your 125 for.. Im really sorry to hear about your bird.

If I can figure out where to put it, $300 includes stand and canopy, substrate, lightning system, heating, and two Fluvals.

he, im so sorry to hear about the poor lil guy, i had a 2 cockatiels, bubble & sqweak, sqweak died about a year ago, bubbles was really happy for some reason to be on her own, then my father found a stray sitting in out garden and so he put the cadge with bubbles in in next to this bird and it hopped in and lived happily until my lil sisterwent to say hello to them one morning and they were both dead!!!!! :rip:

i think it must have been the stray, he could've had an infection and passed it to my poor bubbles. now i have no birdies

well done for doing what u did, it was really kind and thoughtful, not alot of people would've done that!!!!!!

Oh I am so sorry to hear he didn't make it. You give him the best chance though so that should make you feel a little better. I have found, after working with small parrots for so long, that they don't take stress too well at all. There is no telling how long he had been out either and consider the weather and how long he had been without food because he would not recognize anything as food. Other birds will attack too if they see it.

Well, you did your best and you can feel good about that! You went above and beyond! ;)
