Just wondering what the big draw is. Do you do it because you like to see the babies? Do you do it for profit? And if you do it for the entertainment, what do you do with all the fry once they start to grow?

Just curious is all. It seems that everyday more and more posts pop-up about it and grabbed my attention.

I think it's the challenge of getting them to breed successfully, the challenge of getting everything just right to be able to raise the fry and just the fun of watching it all. No profit expected here, but I have already talked to my lfs and they will take any resulting fry when they get to be a sellable size.

same here - its the challenge :)

It's the challenge.

What's fishkeeping if you can't view all aspects of it?

It'd be nice if we could profit from it, but the market's way too small. :/

Hi n00bie :)

I raise cory cats and enjoy watching them grow from tiny fry to adults. When they are old enough I trade them to my lfs for store credit to help offset the cost of this expensive hobby.

In some cases, they spawn whether I want them to or not. But I have others that just don't seem to want to. It's a challenge trying to figure out just what conditions are needed to get them to do it.

This is such an excellent thread that I will move it to Tropical Chit Chat where it will be seen by many more members. :D

Its the ultimate sign that your fish are healthy and happy, if the fish are comfortable enough to want to breed then you must be doing things right.

It's fun! The fry are adorable, and I get attached to the little guys. It's interesting to see what the fish will "create." I had two black dalmation mollies which had a school of white dalmation mollies. I was pleasantly surprised! My first ever fry are now 6 weeks old. It's fun to watch them "grow up"! Plus, you get free fish out of the deal! :D

I was not intending on fry to occur, but i was over the moon, to know that life was given in my room, my bedroom of all place, and something saw it fit to bring new life into my room, now i get happy to see it didnt just happen once but a second batch arrived, and now i am egarly awaiting the third batch of swordtail and my first batch of guppies...

Once they grow up i wish to put them in the main tank however at the moment i just have enough fish in the tank, so i am letting them grow up in their own tank, but i have a plan to get a bigger tank, in which i can get all the fish into..

;)

:) Well, I love to raise fry! I like to watch them go from tiny helpless babies into beautiful young fish. There are some fish that are special to me and it's great to see their traits pasted on to their offspring. :fish: When I started fish keeping, I never actually intended to breed fish. Even if I purchased pregnant females (livbearers) the fry never survived. Now, I think I'm a bit overpopulated on fry survival rate! It's a great accomplishment to be able to raise something that might have ended up as a snack to my other fish! :hyper:

I like the challenge and the fact that it's like having this small little world in your room where all these things live, make babies and die like in the real world. In a way it's humbling. That and it has a magic about it, because with fish it's often, oh my god, look, babies!! because you can't feel them for little jumps in their bellies or you miss the fact that they laid eggs or you go on vacation, come back and bam there are little babies all over the place. Today I got to be the one to tell the lady at this little mom and pop fish store that there was fry in a tank. I was like, what's in this tank? and she told me just snails. I was like but what are the babies from? Tada, she didn't know there were any. At the moment I'm breeding for live food but I also let my little brother get first pick out of any non breeders for his tank.
