I'd like to buy Nelson some real good treats. I've heard much about brine shrimp and blood worms. I went to a local pet store and all they had were frozen. Do most people get live or frozen food for their bettas? I've heard that either way you need to make sure to clean the food before feeding it to your betta, what's the safest way to do this?

Nelson thanks you greatly!

Frozen is the way to go. I defrost a chunk in a glass with some tank water and feed using an eye dropper.

I use both frozen and live. I get Hikari frozen, which is the best and safest.
Hikari is the best:thumbs: That's all I use too

I've found the best for the bettas (as far as what they like) is bloodworms, brine and mysis srimp, occasionally they like krill. Hikari makes a frozen mega tropical mix with bananas, carrots, shrimp and bloodworms, they like that too. I only use blackworms or brine as live adult food.

Hi Draven :)

I feed lots of live blackworms and sometimes tubifex worms and have never had any problems with them. Personally, I don't like the store bought frozen ones. When I've tried them I found them to be nasty looking and bad smelling, and I wondered whether they were alive or dead when they were put up.

Feeding live ones gives you the opportunity to give your fish ones that you know are clean and healthy appearing.

To clean them, I put them in a 2 cup measuring cup that has a little spout to make pouring the water out easy. Then I add cold tap water and stir them around. After letting them settle for a minute, I pour off the dirty water and repeat it once or twice more until the water runs clean.

After washing, I pour off all but enough water to cover them and store them in a covered jar in the refrigerator. Each day I rinse them off again to keep them clean and fresh.

I do not recommend buying more than a few days supply at once because they have a limited life expectancy. I figure on two trips to the lfs weekly to keep a steady supply for my fish.

frozen. i try to keep both around and i tend to feed the freeze dried when im too lazy to go downstairs, pull out the food and thaw it. bettas prefer frozen ime.

Hikari or just the mega-tropical? My lfs is mainly a salt water shop and they stock a wide variety of frozen foods. :)

I think frozen is best too, live makes me nervous a bit.

Hi fourplayfishy :)

Welcome to the forum :flowers:

IMHO, live food is better than frozen, but frozen is better than freeze dried.

If you have other fish too, get the live ones. But if not, it won't last long enough to get used up and you will have to throw some away. The dried is good because it is inexpensive and lasts a long time.

In the end, it might turn out to be a matter of feeding whichever one your fish prefers. :D

you can keep it frozen for a couple weeks, umm, i would get 1 pack and it should last for a couple weeks

How much do you use per serving and how to you feed it to them?
I agree, one package will last forever for one betta. The best way is to melt a tiny, tiny piece in a cup with some tank water, and feed with an eyedropper or your finger. Since not everybody has live at their disposal, frozen is the way to go
