Sorry i cannot see why someone needs to own a gun in the uk??
i think that has already been discussed. shooting is a sport that many people take part in safely and legally. and guns are also necessary to control pests.

What is the point of owning your own guns though?

why not go to a designated shooting place and hire them for use within the grounds of said place?
it would not work having a designated place and hiring them etc. i, for example shoot in my garden and the field next door, to keep the rabbit and pigeon numbers down, as the rabbits eat all of our plants and dig holes in the field next door, endangering the racehorses in the field. and the pigeons fly into our veg patch, and eat the plants. so if we were only allowed to shoot on certain places and had to hire the gun out, then it would not be possible to keep the numbers down.

However, it isn't just the shooting bit. many people like to own their gun, and wouldn't want to hire one out. would you want to hire a car out every time you want to use it, just because people die in car accidents?

cheers :good:

Yes i noticed  but it was ment in a way of just saying....everyone has an oppinion and that is mine,

oh right, i get you now. :good:

Quite sad that people live in our society without help and are ticking time bombs as this guy may have been

My point exactly Simon - there is a lot of difference to a cold blooded killer and someone who has a mental health issue - people with a mental health issue may cause the most awful of things to happen but they are most certainly not 'evil' and to think like that would be taking us back over a hundred years to lunatic asylums. Mental health issues effect so many people now  what sort of a society are we becoming?

Terrible incident, he didn't really have a cause to posses the weaponry.

Possible solutions....

- Arm police faster.
- Personal firearms must be locked up in a secure non home location i.e police station, signed in and out.
- No weapons for anyone
- Right to bear arms for everyone.

My favourite Solution...

Arm police faster, make them more readily accessible to live rounds or effective weapons. Tasers should be carried by ALL qualified officers as well as their standard issue batons, Specifically the taser shotgun, fantastic weapon. Will help prevent issues like this but will also curb the idiots who think its good to entice the police into a fight. No one should be exempt from being taser'd if you've broke the law. All these "Horrific" incidents where someone has been taser'd really cheeses me off..

The police need to crack down and hard on crime...

Of course the shootings in Cumbria was more about the mental instability of ONE man. However it does really bring to light how useless the Police force is once someone brings out a bigger weapon than the police are currently allowed to carry.

interestingly enough Joshua I;m only just seeing the taser being used in last 6 months in Bhead,

Unfortunately the cumbria type crime can;t be anticipated so nothing can prevent it. No matter what the laws do there will always be guns but I agree that the police if armed should if they could have got to him with firearms first.... but from reading about it there seems little that could have tsopped this tragedy.

Even with the sentencing on firearms they're still used all too much although I do have some lads who "only" use non firearm weapons as the sentence is enough to deter them... sounds a bit crazy that but true

The whole subject annoys me a bit, for one... most guns used irresponsibly are illegal weapons, possibly changed from replicas or something along those lines. Secondly if you took away guns, how far will it go, will they take away knives and other objects that could be used to cause harm?

Imo someone could have just as easily gone around with a knife and done the same thing.

This happens rarely and occasionally you get some crazy person who will do this, and its almost impossible to prevent and never going to be cured in this day and age.

I was shocked to hear about how long it went on for, I would have thought it would have been stopped quicker..Armed police are quick nowadays.

what would this achieve? How would it stop people from signing out their firearms and then using them to commit crimes?

Oh, and its stupid to refer to firearms as weapons, its akin to calling all of your kitchen knives weapons... 'pass me a butter weapon please dear'

It's not that funny but it made me LOL!

I think tranqs in guns or tasers would be better than nothing. There were unarmed police in Cumbria; but they couldn't do anything...tasers or tranquilisers would achieve something.

I dunno, I doubt police officers would be told to approach someone with a firearm if they were armed with tasers or tranquillisers, tranquillisers for starters require precise dosages (aleast they seem to when they're used against animals) and you have to be close to use tasers.

Ideal against drunks or people with knives I guess, not so great against firearms.
