I recently upgraded from a 2ft tank to a 3ft tank. the bloke at lfs recommended using the 2ft UG filter for the 3ft tank, & said it promoted beneficial bacteria growth in the area without filtration. He showed that this was how he had all his tanks set up.

I was concerned this would not be adequate as i have a lot of bottom feeders (3 clown loach, 5 assorted cories, albino bristlenose & golden nugget plec) so bought a 2nd hand fluval 4.

The problem is that the fluval is quite powerful and swirls the water up on its lowest setting. This is not too good for my male betta.

Currently I have put a section of hose in the filter outlet and run the hose to the far end of the tank, and only run the filter for a couple of hours a day to reduce disturbance.

Does this set up sound reasonable? The water quality is clear and good, but Im a little concerned it is underfiltered, ive read a lot about UGF and their good & bad points and think i may have to run the filter for longer to compensate.
