bought this second hand but unable to get it going.... should it make a noise when you plug it in or just when you get the flow going... i got nothing at the mo

take the motor off the casing and plug it into the power point. See if the impellor spins. If it doesn't then the motor is stuffed and needs replacing. Clean the impellor & housing out before testing just to make sure it isn't clogged up and dirty.

ok...... bear with me here as im a girl... but how do i take the motor off the housing?

There should be some plastic clips around the top edge of the filter that pop open and allow the top of the filter (the motor) to come away from the bottom of the filter (the casing/housing).
Once you have seperated it you can turn the motor upside down and there should be a clear round plastic disc in the middle. The impellor (magnet with plastic blades on) is located under this round disc. You should be able to see it through the round disc.
Plug the unit into a power point and see if the impellor spins around.
*NB* You can run them for a few seconds out of water without causing any damage to the motor. Prolonged use out of water will cause it to overheat and malfunction.

oh bligh you must thick im thick not getting that
yes but done that already and no turning of the impellor

if the impellor is clean and not turning then the motor is stuffed and needs replacing.

did you check the plug first ? and maybe try changing the fuse in the plug as well.

These should not be run dry without water, and may not, so put it all together and in place, prime it using the rod on the top of the pump, which is very difficult or manually siphon it by sucking on the output pipe of the filter either directly or using a second hose, the turn it on, if nothing come sout then yes the pump is knackered.
Good luck.
