Hi all

Just bought a Fluval 2 Plus, plugged it in and its just making a squeeling shrill sound - its not in the water yet

Does it sound pooped or does the noise go when its in the water?

Cheers!

It is most likely a self priming pump, it needs to be submerged before it can start pumping water, most mechanical pumps sound like this when they are not moving water.

Ahhh.... thats cool, cheers!

The filter I currently run is made by AA - Aquariums and has 3 stage filtration, the water goes into 3 compartments, first one being bio-rings, next one sponge and charcoal then one filled with air

Did not realise the Fluval 2 Plus only has sponge filters but has a higher throughput of water

Based on this, which one should I keep?

You can't ever run a filter without water. You will damage and break it. I'm sure the new filter is just fine once you have it fully submerged. When using it for the first time, give it a few 180 degree turns in the tank to make sure there are no air bubble trapped. And make sure there is at least 1" of water above the filter once you attach it to the glass :)

Thanks for that, it only ran for about 2 seconds, it was switched straight off

Will keep it as a backup filter....

Well the Fluval will remove most floating debris, however the other will remove chemicals in the water, the best option is to really use the Fluval in a quarantine tank, as it is only a sponge filter it will not remove any medications that you might want to use.
