Edit - no water changes during fishless cycle! If you remove the water, you are removing the ammonia that you have added to the water. Removing the ammonia means less food for the bacteria, so the cycle takes longer.

I kinda dont have any ammonia to add, i just put in some flakey food, hoping that would break down into ammonia type stuff ...

Havent had any solid "Yes that will work" or "No that wont work" remarks yet

afaik, yes that will woprk, but very slowly, and not as well as if you were using ammonia. Female fighters have short fins which arent as long and flowy as the males so if you only want them for the finnage maybe a female isnt for you...

Yes, using food does work. but slower. It takes a while for the food to break down into ammonia. I have a fishkeeping book that recommended fishless cycling using fishfood or raw meat. Wouldn't fancy trying that myself but whatever
