afaik, yes that will woprk, but very slowly, and not as well as if you were using ammonia. Female fighters have short fins which arent as long and flowy as the males so if you only want them for the finnage maybe a female isnt for you...
 
Yes, using food does work. but slower. It takes a while for the food to break down into ammonia. I have a fishkeeping book that recommended fishless cycling using fishfood or raw meat. Wouldn't fancy trying that myself but whatever :blink:
